Today, Tom sent me some snap shots of the last Miller Falls boring machine he just finished restoring to working order. It shows the condition it was in when he got it. How it looks apart, cleaned it up and put it back together again.

I created a short video of the pictures and posted it on YouTube.

Thanks for watching.

Looks great!! What did Tom use to get it so clean? A parts clean bath or air-blaster?

I was also going to ask that. Does he use electrolysis?

Does Tom clean up the parts with wire wheel or bead blasting in a cabinet? Does he paint the machine or seal the metal in some way?
I have a glass bead blasting cabinet, but it looks like those parts are wire wheeled.  I need to get a good wire wheel for a bench grinder.  I know the wire wheeling can do a sort of polishing that helps close the grain of the metal and make it a bit more resistant to rust.
Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!
If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!

Well, I'll have to ask him.

I'm not sure if he'd want me to give away his "trade secrets"  ;D

I will let you know what he says.

Tom stopped by today to pick up some tools we are shipping out.

He mentioned that he uses solvents, wire brushes, sandpaper, electrolysis, whatever it takes to clean the rust off the tools. One solvent he really likes is CLR.

Once the metal is clean and dry, I believe he sprays it with a clear acrylic coating, to prevent the moisture in the air from settling on the metal and starting rusting again. The wooden handles on chisels sometimes are just coated with bee's wax. The wood bases are usually coated with some oil, but I'm not sure which. I know this because when all the tools are in my truck it smells real nice.
