Well DanG,  I guess that big fish log didn't get away after all.  smiley_thumbsup

DanG

No Bob, it didn't get away. ;D  I covered up that slab with some old boards, on stickers, and let it set there till we could get together again.  That time finally came today. 8)

Mike showed up before 9 this morning and we got down to business after a brief visit.  Used the loader to flip the big slab over onto some bunks, then set the saw up around it.  Mike whittled away at it, but due to a big "swayback" in the log, we didn't get many boards.  Got a bunch of small pieces with some nice grain and color, though.  We got it down to what we were after, then flipped it over by hand, with lots of grunting and straining.  That DanG thing is HEAVY!  We then leveled it up with no small amount of thinkin' and measurin' and shimmin' and thinkin' some more. Finally got it close enough to be satisfied, and made one "planing" pass on the side that had been cut before.  Here's what we came up with.

Here's Mike making that "planing" cut on the old side of the slab.

Here's the finished product.   8) 8) 8)

Here's the flip side, resting on the loader back at the shop.

Since this grew right next to the new house site, we'll be using it in the house.  I'm thinkin' me and Mike need to look for some more of these!

That slab really is impressive.  DanG takes a good picture, but those still don't do it justice.  It is really something to behold 8)

We did have to do some serious thinking a few times.  Getting the rails parallel to the BOTTOM of the stab took some delicate repositioning.

"Serious" and "thinking" are 2 things that Mike and I don't do too often when we get together.  We spent a lot more time flapping our faces at one another, than we did actually working. :D :D :D  We had a great time doing this together.  We went and looked at another pecan log that I can get, too.  I think we can get 2 of these slabs out of it. ;D

Yeah Mark, we done pretty good on this'un.  That's the same tree that produced the spectacular boards in the "cuttin' firewood with Woodbowl" thread.

Woodbowl, I've cut up a couple more of those logs on my mill, and there are some small ones left.  We also got a few truckloads of firewood out of it. ;D

That a real nice slab DanG. I must admit that it would be impossible on my LT 15, but I sure would love to cut some slabs like that. I need to talk to a fella that lives a 1/4 mile up the road from me.

He just bulldozed about a dozen big pecans into a big pile for burning.  :( :( :'( :'(

I would like to get some to make a corner hutch with glass doors. This is his second batch, I waited too late last time and all i smelt was that sweet smoke it puts off. Need to call him today

That is one fine looking slab of pecan. If you were as fast as Reid Crosby was on the TV show, you would already be sitting at a beautiful finished pecan desk or table. ::)

DanG

Bob, If I was as fast as Reid, I'd have a house to put it in, too. :D :D :D  I thought about him as we were cutting this, and wondered just what he would do with it.  I've got a few thimble-brained ideas, but don't know if I can pull them off. ::)

Don K, get your carcass over there and get whatever you can out of that pile!  Don't worry about the big trunks, but look for large branches that may have stood more or less vertically.  They're common on the old grafted trees.  You should find plenty that your LT-15 will handle, and you can get some super nice stuff out of them.  Be mighty careful, though.  That wood is big and heavy, and no telling what sort of pressure is on some of it from being piled by the dozer.  Take some good help with you and THINK before you cut!

was that log a windfall, Dan?

you might be able to "dig up" the rest of it.  hopefully it hasn't hooked itself back in too bad...

There's a fine line between turning firewood into beautiful things and beautiful things into firewood.

DanG

Yeah Dan, the tree was uprooted by Hurricane Dennis.  We cut the bole off as close to the root ball as possible.  The root ball didn't try to move, and is still "standing" where the tree fell.  It's about 7 or 8 feet high.  We'll deal with it when we get the backhoe in to dig the footer for the house, hopefully within a month. ;D 8) 8) 8)

BTW, we turned in the application for our building permit on Friday, and it should be approved in a  week to 10 days.  My current goal is to break ground on New Year's Day, weather permitting. :) :)

DanG, You "say" you finished that cut yesterday and from your pictures looked DanG nice outdoors so i decided to come up out of my hibernation hole and have a gander and heres what i saw!

"Weather permitting"  Do you work like I do, only when it is dry and between 65 and 75 degrees F. :o ;D

DanG

That's usually the way it goes around here, Bob, but this time, I don't want to dig the footer trench on Sunday and then have Noah's second flood on Monday.  Besides that, I don't want to mess with it if it ain't between 65 and 75. ;D
