ash is underated in my opinion. i like the grain, it saws pretty tough. last i checked it was around $300 a thousand, cheap for what it is
timber harvester,tinberjack230,34hp kubota, job ace excavator carpenter tools up the yingyang,

red oaks lumber

if i was forced to work with one wood it would be ash with out a doubt.$300 per th should buy good logs
the experts think i do things wrong

Ash is good wood but hard to sell, outher than a few markets. You'll have better luck selling oak,my experiance, your mileage may vary. Frank C.

I never could sell ash to my customers...mostly hobby woodworkers.

I built some ash cabinets and also put some into flooring.  Got all kind of praise but folks didn't have a clue as to the wood species.

Does anyone have any pictures of what Ash looks like sawed?
Thanks
I can get it for 100 a cord in 8 foot lengths been cut for 2 years they say its still sound.

Larry

It might be sound but ash is a white wood and susceptible to stain.  Bugs like to munch on ash also.

Found this pic in my gallery of a ash cabinet.

A lot of antique oak furniture is really ash. ;)  Takes somebody pretty sharp to distinguish the difference.

Ash is a beautiful, durable hardwood that makes stunning flooring, cabinets and many other uses.  It is susceptible to the emerald ash borer, and is now in the middle of a national epidemic of this pest.  Because of this problem, insect killed ash logs will be more and more available at lower and lower prices.  The lumber is beautiful, flat or quarter sawn.  Regards, Clark

I remember seeing an article in a past 'woodmizer way' magazine about a guy who made his own cabinets out of ash logs he milled.  Those cabinets looked so nice that I never forgot that pic, and now have some ash trees on my land picked out for that specific use.

I'd take white ash over red oak, and you wouldn't even have to ask my preference. "You got any? I'll take it." That's a golden hardwood to me.  8) Stable when worked, shines like glass when properly finished.

Around us it goes for pallets and is priced as such. I like the wood for woodworking but ppb's are terrible in the sapwood. If it's been down for 2 years I'd look really close at the logs to see if they've gotten into it.

SwampDonkey

I think downed trees and logs cut and stored tend to be PPB free as the sapwood uses up the starch reserves to keep the parenchyma cells alive. However, they are susceptible to other insects and fungus. It's the starches that the beetle is after and open grained woods are most susceptible, including oaks, elms and hickory, walnut, butternut. The insect lays eggs in the large open early wood pores.
