Homelite XL Clutch removal

Does the nut holding the clutch assembly turn reverse thread on a Homelite XL?
This little bugger runs like a champ and I'd like to keep it going but the clutch is shot.
I've got a donor Saw with what looks like the same exact clutch on another Homelite about the same vintage.
What is the trick to getting this nut off?  I tried sticking a screwdriver on the Pullcrank side to keep it from moving but want to make sure I'm not tightening when I wanta loosen. ;)

I wouldn't do that with the screwdriver. 

The chainsaw experts should be here to give you the skinny on the direction. Seems the threads are visible from the pic tho.

Hope it works to exchange the clutch.

Tie a knot in a piece of starter rope and feed it down the spark plug hole Rotate the crank in the normal direction until the piston hits the rope. Run the nut clockwise to loosen, it is left hand thread..

a piston stop either bought from a saw shop  or baileys works good one can also be made from a peice of round stock with threads matching the spark plug port so it threads in and the piston rests on it while you take the clutch off. i made one when i replaced the clutch on a stihl o51 av

Do what you want but I've seen holes punched in the top of a piston from using a metal piston stop . A rope would be a better choice or a nylon piston stop .

Not so sound lke a smart alec but a spark plug thread is M14 1.25 and you won't find a piece of all thread or a bolt with that sized thread .

The nut holding the sprocket cover was lefty loosey counter clockwise.
Turns out the Clutch is a little smaller on the donor.  I'm wondering if it is worth tacking the sprocket back onto the cover as I can't get the spider gear off the crank to make a complete swap.
Is there a trick to get the spider assembly off?

I'd assume it would screw off .As far as that clutch drum though  you could probably measure it and cross reference it to something .MFG supply lists a bunch of drums on their site .

What is that thing anyway,one of those itty bitty little XL-2's or some variation .

Here is a picture of the Saws.
The XL on the right is the donor saw.
The other was something I got off of Craigslist and doesn't have a model designation anywhere I can find.  These saws really don't owe me anything but I like the weight to power performance. ;)

I don't have a clue what it is but since you posted a pic someone will .The little Xl was Homelites answer to a mini Mac .It comes as no surprise they won't interchange .

If you can figure out what model it is you shouldn't have a problem finding a clutch drum .

If the saw on the right is the older version of XL it may have 1/4 pitch chain on it.  You should measure to make sure.  Measure between three rivets and divide by 2. 

The spur sprocket showing for the little red XL mini is now in 3/8 lo pro, part number from Oregon is 27958.  You will probably need to replace the sprocket, the chain and also the bar if it has a sprocket tip.  You cant run 1/4 pitch chain on a 3/8 sprocket or bar tip and vice versa.  The bar may tell you the pitch and gauge where its stamped to check there too.

I've a double triggered version of the little Xl in the shed which does have 1/4" on it .

If he knew exactly what model the left saw was I imagine the clutch drum wouldn't be hard to find .The big question is,what exactly is it ?

Now I've got the big old 20 pound dealers parts lists for Homelite but I haven't the foggiest what that thing is else I could spit out the part number in about 5 minutes .

If somebody doesn't pop up with the answer he may have to refer this one to RBW's site where the Homey experts gather .If it were a Mac or a Stihl I could help but as it is ,I'm lost .

Go to the Homelite site>Service and Support. Follow the prompts then enter the UT number.

Unfortunately that site does not recognize that number .In fact a seach of a model UT I do believe is a string trimmer .Something is amiss I believe .
