A friend is giving me a McCulloch Eager Beaver saw.  It has maybe ten hours on it and he is the only owner.  I have been looking for a saw to cut small branches  three inches and under.  I hope this will fill the bill.

Caloren

Bought one of those about 1994. worked fine for the small stuff we were clearing at the time. Have had several McCulloch saws over the years that gave good service.
Stihl MS 170, Stihl MS 310, Stihl 028 AV Super, and half a dozen other no-accounts! Cat D4 D.

Be careful, these little saws with their high rpm and short bar, are poorly balanced, they like to bite.

I've never been cut my self  [close], they like to go for the face and upper body.
Third generation logger, owner operator, 30 yrs felling experience with pole skidder. I got my neck broke back in 89, left me a quad. The wife kept the job going up to 96.

Being a "top handle" saw means that your hands are positioned very close together. Makes any kickback harder to control., and you should avoid the temptation to run it one handed.

Not a deal stopper, but you do need to be more careful

Thanks for the advice.  Got the saw for free!  The owner is a good friend of mine.  Needs a little cleaning, new spark plug and i will try firing it up tomorrow.  It has not run in 15 years!  It is a nice little saw and should do exactly what I want.

15 years? Good chance the carb parts and fuel lines will have decayed / dried out etc.

If it does fire up, bonus. If not, then it might need a bit more than a clean.

No serious parts needed, but a carb overhaul kit, and new fuel line probably.

Bailey's has bars and chains for it, but where could I get a carb kit?

Most times the carb is a standard model that's used on a dozen different saws, and wasn't even made by McCulloch.

Try ChainsawR on the sponsors list on the right. He has a big range of carb kits listed.

Here is a parts list for the saw

Looks like it uses either a Walbro or Zama carb depending on the exact model, and parts are available for most of those.

It's just a later version of the Mini Mac .It's much easier to work on than the older style though .

I'm not exactly sure which carb it has but most likely the Zama .

A friend of mine at work gave me one in similar condition a few years ago.  I replaced all of the fuel lines and it starts and runs fine.

Sadly I can not find a carb rebuild kit.  My local guy thinks they stop making them about three years ago.  He is trying to locate one.

It's an M7 Zama which I think uses kit number rb-19 .You can find them but they want around 20 bucks for them .Hmm a couple years back they only fetched 5 bucks ,inflation perhaps .Geeze 20 bucks can fetch a whole 'nother mini Mac . :D

Now then being Zama if you researched the individual parts like the diaphragm and check valves more than likely another kit would work .The gaskets might be different but they don't wear out providing you can get them apart without ruining them .
