I posted a while ago showing two black walnut logs from a tree blown down by Irene.  These aren't those two logs (they're still to be milled), but they are from a similar tree also blown down by Irene.  After a tough day getting the two logs pulled up and out of the ravine the tree fell into, and getting stuck trying to pull the mill out of the kind woman's backyard, I created a half-day's work of ruts to fill and seed.  I really enjoyed milling the "free" logs though.

You can see what kind of day it was, weather-wise.

My hardware collection.  I knew it was there and, luckily, was able to turn out the last 3 inches of clothesline hook.

A representative face, although the second log did have a few small knots.  Average width (with sapwood) around 17".

The finished stack, awaiting transport home.

I milled 10/4 and 12/4+ slabs, and some 6/4 getting to the middle third of the log.  Seems to be some interest in this size for bar tops, etc., even though a glue-up will probably be needed to get to the desired width.  Regardless, it is some fine looking wood.

Excellent.  I like the way that you cut them thick.  That really increases the value, up to double over 4/4.

Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!
If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!

No.  I milled it, hit it with the blower, and took some pictures.  And it was noticeably darker after 45 minutes.  I know what you mean about the greenish tint, though, having seen it on others.  I milled a shorter crotch piece of the same tree early last week and it came off the mill even darker than this one.
