Suet for the wild birds is a dollar a pound at the local butcher shop.

Suet is the fat surrounding the kidneys and it is not as prone to going rancid.  It is an energy food for the woodpeckers, chickadees and juncos.  I live in Oregon and we are starting to get snow that will stick on the hills until april.

I also want to try feeding some to the chickens.  Seems like they eat everything, perhaps even suet?

My dad used to put it out in a wire cage.  I am starting to put some out.  Any lessons I need to learn from Y'all before I learn things the hard way?

Put it up high enough so the dogs, cats and racoons can't get to it.

Don't hang it where it will drip grease on anything important, like the siding of your house.

I don't see why the chickens would not eat the suet. But raising for meat or eggs? When I had chickens any foor scraps would go to the chickens. They really liked a turkey carcass. One guy I know was feeding alot of bread to the chickens, slowed the egg production down.I buy a hunk of suet,I really don't know how much, pound or 2 than I cut it up about an inch think by as wide as the chunk and put it into the freezer for the birds. Our feeder is about 6 inches square by about an inch thick. This way I start out with 4-6 pieces in the freezer and than when they need more it's in the freezer. I really enjoy the birds, but have no idea where they are this year. Been real warm here, for this time of year, but I would still think a couple would show up.
