A reminder of the Second World War.

I thought some of you fellas might have been interested in reading this article, it's me on the front page of our local newspaper yesterday. Our district was chosen for the camps during the second World War apparently because of its tree lines and shelterbelts, its all added to the camouflage of things. Just as a passing point (and I do know the answer) can anyone tell me what the US Navy used as mascots on their warships during WW2? One of my Uncles spent some time somewhere in New Zealand during WWII. I don't know where and he's gone now but he did show me some old pictures of him and some buddies somewhere in some mountains.

Oh we have mountains not far from us, I might be able to tell you where they were taken if they were local. The yarns about the camps are as long as ones memory, stuff is still surfacing. After reading yesterdays paper another fella in town today told me some more.

My dad was stationed at the US Navy Supply Depot in Christchurch during the last 18 months of the war. I have a half-sister who lives there to this day.

There was another yarn now I remember in that a German submarine crew rowed a small boat ashore at our local coastline during the war, they then walked to some of the local farmhouses armed with machine guns and raided the farmers houses for food before leaving again, they had apparently run out of supplies on their sub.
