Had a few things happen this year that put off my sawmill building project, anyway I got the kinks worked out and I'm ready to buy the materials I need to finish.

I wanted to ask you guys and gals your opinion on a few things before i run down and buy the stuff.

Column steel. I intend to make a 4 post saw head where to the two front posts take most of the weight and the rear posts are for added support.
I want to use 3x3x.25 thick box tubing for this and 2x2x.125 for the rear posts.

I'll be supporting a 350 pound engine, (2) 14 or 15 inch tires.

Next question the roller beam that rides on angle iron on the track. I was planning on making the length of this beam 48 inches long from 3x3x.25 box tubing and then bolting and tack welding to the columns. Does 48 inches sound long enough?

Thanks in advance. Hope to start uploading pictures again soon as the build resumes.

HI
I have seen some mills built out of that type material....but if you are at all like me .....and like to really use stuff and test it....maybe a little heavier  or larger ???
Of course that is how I try to built everything..twice as tough as I think it needs to be....thenit is usually right :D :D :D

Perhaps 3 x 4 box tubing for the columns or 4x4?

perhaps 4x4 on the roller beam as well?

My build is a copy of my friends Timber Harvester. 2x2x1/4 is what I am using .

Thanks for the replies, I'll just get the 4x4 steel.

I don't own a cutting torche so pretty much have to stay around 5 or 6 inch stuff so I can use my metal chop saw or skill saw with abrasive disks on it.

Thanks again. I'll post some photos in a couple weeks.
