Was monitoring my boiler and noticed the water temp was 174 and the reaction chamber temp was 540.  My water target sett point is 190 w/ a temp differential of 8 degrees.

Shouldn't the boiler be cranking to get the water temp back to 190?

THere is plenty of wood and a lot of coals.

Bob.  and 8 degree differential is pretty small.  I think that a larger span will give you a better burn because it isn't going to burn long enough to really get the fire going and you'll be up to temp.

I have my settings at 190 for a shut down temp, 15 degree differential, cycle at 15 minute intervals for 50 seconds during idle.

Did your reaction chamber temp just stop and "hover" around 540 or did it go up and down.  If so, what was the range of the fluctutation?

If you are hitting 540 and it just stalls there, use your poker and poke it through the ash and coals and into the hole going down into the reaction chamber.  You have a blockage there and air is not getting down through.  Sometimes what looks like a really nice bed of coals is actually hindering flow down into the reaction chamber.  Poke through the coal and ash and I think you'll find your problem solved.
