building a smokehouse out of block and faced with creek rock that i hand picked from my creek. door will be 2" -32"wide by 6'6"tall. friend at a local sawmill is going to mill the boards. we're not sure of the wood yet-maybe sassafrass, persimmon,wh. oak. whatever has good grain.
i want a rustic look-the house is behind my log barn. will probably have to dry these boards for a fair amt. of time(?) to preclude warpage.a blacksmith is forging the mounting hardware. will probably use 1" dowels to fasten the boards together along with a strong glue(?).not looking for a book-matched,perfectly flat door-just something that will look good.
as for finish,i'm not sure. would many coats of tung oil work or how about sloshing on a mix of turps, linseed oil and a light stain? any other suggestions?

Take a few pieces of " PRACTICE WOOD". Stain, paint, varnish, oil it, beat it with a chain or do what ever you like to your practice wood to find the look you want. Then when you find your look....apply it to your project.  smiley_thumbsup

P.S. I've always liked tongue oil on a lot of wood.
The older I get I wish my body could Re-Gen.
