More free logs

[pineywoods]

Couple of weeks ago, one of my neighbors dropped by and says to me.. Logging crew doing a clearcut, left me some firewood trees. WE need to get these logs out before it rains.  I hooked my trailer behind the tractor and hauled logs for several days. The tops are firewood, but the logs are prime oak 20-30 inch. Here's the take, 12 nice 16 ft logs



 


Today, another neighbor drives up in my yard with some walnut logs on his trailer. He wants this ugly thing sawed into bowl blanks.


 


In return, I get this.. Butt cut, 28 inch standing dead yard tree. I'll turn it into display cases for veterans casket flags.

In the pictures it looks like that butt log has some twist in it from the cracks/ bark characteristics ect.

There will be some good lumber coming out of those "firewood" logs  .

Believe it or not, there's a logical explanation. These were a few trees in an old pasture. Abandoned, the pasture was over run with fast growing southern yellow pine, which now is marketable size. The landowner opts to clearcut and replant more pines. Not enough hardwood to make up a load, and they are scattered all over an 80 acre tract. Just too expensive to gather then up and find a market for half a load of hardwood logs. In short..economics. I spent the better part of 4 days getting the logs out using a tractor and trailer. I work CHEAP  ;D I see this situation occasionally, have even gotten some nice syp logs where just one or two logs left on a landing.

Hey Pineywood's how about pic's and price's of the flag display cases you mentioned. My Father passed away in November and I was thinking the other day I needed one. He was a Vietnam vet, agent orange got him. Congratulations on the nice haul of free logs!

jdatwood, there is no charge. This is something I do to honor my fellow veterans. Started out just for ww2 vets, but I don't exclude any one who has served our country. They are simple oiled walnut cases that completely enclose a folded flag, and still allow it to be displayed. There is room for a small brass name plate, which I don't supply. Pm me a snail mail address and I will put you on the list
