Oh the "trail" good enough.   :)   WE have pretty level terrain so the arch on the skidder was lifted . But the solution to the mud/chain issue was building the shear , I guess you call it a chomper.  Now there is a rascal that demands your attention.   :D

Ok, you lost me here somewhere.  ??? What is the purpose of this shear? What do you shear with it? Obviously not the type of shear (feller buncher) that cuts down trees, nor the kind of shears that cut paper or wool. So-- clue in the clueless here, what do you shear with your shear, and how does that help with the mud and chain issue?

probably poor Stephen is working for a living.I think his shear is like the wood processor called The Chomper, or Chomper, out of OR or WA state. Do a google it should come right up. The Chomper is a firewood processor with a shear blade that cuts;shears, the wood to stove wood length. I think he twitches the trees out and brings them to the landing and than process them through the shear.I would expect that he is using this for pulp?? With no chain to worry about mud, there is just a big hunk of steel that is tapered to shear the wood off. By the looks of his there is no stop on the outlet side,so he can cut to whatever lenghts he wants. That's how I'm seeing it. I think he is sawing the logs out and the rest is brought out to the landing to go through the shear.

Stephen, how big can you shear with that thing?

Here are two of his pics of the "black knight" from a different angle. Looks like a firewood processor. Date of posting is Nov. 7,8 2009

Man what a day, that wind had some bite to it. -26 or so with the wind chill.  Thanks Beenthere.  It is just a hydraulic press really. The axe shears off the wood to desired length and splits it at the same time.  It produces firewood from 10 to 41" blocked and split. Mud frozen  not a problem just keeps the axe shinny. Green wood (same day) or processing with a bit of drizzle works best. Does produce kindling and bark as it usually blows it off.  Because of the hydraulic pressure the wood opens up and drys quickly.  There are customers that want all shear wood and those that want none. Handles up to 6" dia easy , anything over that depends on species and grain. 10" would be about max.  :)
