I've got a 450a TJ with rockwell rearends in it.  A few months ago I put a new set of ring chains on the back of it.  Since then I have taken out both rear planetaries-one about a month and a half ago, and the other one this past friday.  Wasn't really doing anything major when each broke-pushing a log around and pulling a small hitch.  So, my question is, are the rings too much for the rear end, is it coincidence and they were just ready to go, or is something in the rear end binding up and tearing them apart like the limited slip????

Rockwell rears were notorious for loosing plants,Big machine ,plenty of power if  the traction is all one one wheel with any super aggressive chains those rock hard planetaries will give up . I always preferred the Eaton rears they stood up well. Don

eric check your no spin you have to pull diff. but usually when you have planetary       problems its the culprit

Dixmont, unfortunately thats what I was thinking too but didn't want to admit.  Especially now with 2 ft of snow.  Who's this??

jd540b

She's probably staying locked.  Maybe I'll take the chains off for the next week till I can get this job done and get it inside.  That would ease the strain a bit especially with the snow.

Most planetaries with the bronze pins seem to be trouble be it Rockwell or Eaton. The better ones have steel pins with needle bearings now they are bulletproof, like the WR series in Eaton.Common sense will tell you that with increased traction comes the better chance that something will break. For instance use a four way lock-up on a tandem truck and see how long before something busts up. ;)

I ran chains on the front of C5-D's, 20 yrs and a S8 IH, for 16 yrs, never had any planetary problems. My father had planetary problems with his C5-D. All you had to do is watch him and you could see why.

We never ran chains on the back because when your loaded thats where all the traction is. The best is fluid in the back with chains on the front or chains on all 4.
But then if the non-spin is lock up, when you walk it somethings going to break.

I've left my power divider locked in a couple times on my Autocar, forgot all about it. Boy was i on happy with myself, i got lucky didn't tear it out.
