3rd day I've got to play with my new babydoll ! Actually this is the 3rd log I ever sawed too.
Never knew a poplar had so much color like this one! Anyways I thought it was special. Man I love my woodmizer ! Was a good day .
I would starve to death right now as slow as I am.
I refuse to saw right now in front of anyone until I get her dialed in. Measure twice . Look 10 times . Saw once .
Hahahahahah man I got alot to learn!

so is this what you call yellow poplar and we call tulip wood. I cut some recently and fresh cut like seconds after you move the board the heartwood changes from goldy brown to purple hues. the stuff I have cut holds it color for a week or two as the color slowly fades to brown.such good colors when freshh planned or sanded. would our resident experts or my be wdh care to offer an opinion as to what chemiclas are at play here. the colors are similar to iodine on starch, but that seems to simple. cheers john

If your tulip wood is the species Liriodendron tulipifera, then it is our yellow poplar.
Trees can collect different names depending on different communities, people, and even countries.

Do you know the scientific name for your tulip wood?

As you say liriodendron [tulipfera] it was!

That first time sawing is an  amazing feeling.

Nice mill Fish ;)The boards look nice too. Some nice poplar. Way to go 8)

That is awesome.  The lumber but especially the sawing.  There is nothing like the feeling of producing pretty lumber from a less then log.  You now have something to post in the "Prettiest Lumber" thread.   ;D

I completely understand the "I refuse to saw right now in front of anyone" comment.  That is the way to really get familiar with the WM and sawing.   smiley_thumbsup

The green in the heartwood is the natural color.  The black and purple might be a site effect, maybe some type of mineral stain, but I am not sure.  What I am sure of is that it is beautiful.

Congrats on your new mill. Some times I wish I had bought new, but its a hobby/business and I love the challenge of fixing and making things work. I've only been cutting occasionally for the last 2 months and each log gets easier, except those twisted, crotched ones !  Keith

Congrats on the new mill.

Take your time, you'll get used to everything and be right up to speed, even before Spring, who knows!!!!!

I have just over 35 hours on mine and still get nervous. Not as bad but still nerve racking. I like it more now that 35 hours ago. I am putting a roof over the motor right now. That is incredible looking wood, and nice mill as well.

9 am

Started the day off great . My good friends - neighbors helped me move all my logs. What took them 10 min would have taken me over an hr.
hav been draggin them with my jeep . Then man handle them slightly up hill . Yes uphill. Not best setup spot but it worked.
Had a good friend - experienced sawyer come up and help. As with anything else.... Nothin beats experience. We talked alot more than we sawed but I'm tryin to absorb every thing I can.

After lunch i was on my own scratching my head and kickin sawdust . Once again I'm blessed with great family. Dad and uncle dropped to check on me. They seemed impressed with my progression .
Later in the day my big brother swings by to help me with my accuset.
. Gotta listen to the journey man toolmaker who knows all about fractions and setting up cnc machines .

Had a good day sawing . I'm up to 15 hrs now and confidence is growing. Still slow and very careful .
Worked way into the dark unloading lumber. Don't hav clue how much footage I got today. Gotta count tomoro

Sorry the pic isn't so great

Those look like very nice logs so you will turn out some quality lumber.  Remember, the blade is attracted to things like the log clamp and side supports.   ;D

Great lookin' work for sure Fish. Congrats on the mill, and you picked some good logs to start with. Speed will come, but turning out quality is much better than speed. I've only been milling since the middle of last year, and like you, am still learning. The log stops, and clamp have met the blade a couple of times, and I'm sure it will happen again.  :D  I need to spend some one on one time with an experienced sawyer, and just spend some time "bench sawing", so I can learn. Maybe I'm doing it right, but I'm not 100% sure. But at least I'm having fun.  :)

The fun is just beginning. Making something beautiful from something so plain looking is a great feeling. Enjoy, and keep us updated on your progress.

Hey Fish,
Nice set of logs!  Sounds like you will be looking for a tractor with a loader and forks.
We are at the same point in sawing, just picked up my new mill in December and learning every time I saw.  Took me a little bit to manipulate the controls at the end of a log to roll the debarker off, slow the feed and ect.
What Magicman said, blade is attracted to the side supports.  Yesterday I cleared them by a 1/4" and realized it after the blade passed over the first support.  Then another time I stopped short of the clamp, but forgot to wedge stack before trying to back the blade out.  The blade stayed in place while everything else started come back.  I kinked the blade and now I have a decoration or something to make a sawmill sign out of.
Good luck and have fun sawing.
