I  saw another post about what  project  are you working on, and decided to post about the log hauler sleds i have been building  this spring. The maple sugaring season was pretty much a bust  for those that used buckets, and i said skip it this year and get my log hauler sleds built.
I had a bunch of lombard sled irons, some black locust and red oak  sawn out years back for skis and bunks, and sawed out some white ash a few days ago for reach poles.  Been playing old time blacksmith and wood butcher for over a month and finally finished today !!!!! Two sets of sleds and reaches just under 60 ft. long and probably 2 1/2 tons  . Now  i just have to cut 5 or 6 thousand ft. of hemlock to make display loads. !!! ;D

I am going to soak them down with an oil and diesel fuel mixture, the stack them up and cover them. Many,Many bolts in those things  ;D. lombard patented his sleds, with the irons and the crossed reach poles, so they would all track the same, no one before had done that, at times they had as many as 20 sets of sleds behind one tractor. I made them pretty much like the  originals, most of the logging operators back in the day just bought the irons from lombard and built them with their own wood. Peter he runs a pretty good operation, the Asplund guys have been working out of their yard for a while also.

I would be sitting down too, that is a lot of work.Excellent job.I've built a couple horse drawn work sleds that were cross chained so the rear followed the front.
After seeing your work the bar for quality is set pretty high.
Thanks for the inspiration.

I probably wont be sawing much this summer, after the sleds are put away i have to start on my 28' x84' pole barn,i have the beams and 2x6 and the 2x8's all sawn from last fall. I am pretty much a dub good at making heavy crude things, and working on old iron. You guys with the modern stuff are light years ahead of me !!! ;D

Wow! That is an awesome set up! Were those sleds used only in snow or would they have been in use all year?
It seems I am a coarse thread bolt in a world of fine threaded nuts!

The sleds were only for use on snow. Lombard did make some heavy wagons that would track behind each other for summer use.
