I know it is REALLY, REALLY old but I just bought a Mac PM605 from a guy who never used it much. He says it probably has no more than 10-15 hours on it. I need to find an owners manual to see how to adjust the chain and what specs for the chain slack - and such. And can I get a new chain if it needs one or is it too old?
Is it a 40:1 engine or will 50:1 ratio work - I can adjust the mix, I guess, with a little extra oil but want to be as close to accurate as possible.
it did fire up OK so I know it's not broken but I need to be a little more proficient about the saw; my need is just intermittent and lightweight usage.
Is there a special requirement for the bar oil?
Thanks for any help.

The PM 605 is one of the later versions of the 600 series Macs .A tad smaller at 58 cc instead of 60 like the Pm 610-650 ,Timber wolf 3.7 .

The oiler is an impulse operated diaphragm pump mounted left side forward under the air box cover .To set the oil flow you tighten the screw on the top to decrease flow and loosen to increase .It controls how much oil the diaphragm gets per pulsation of the crankcase impulse .

As far as chain it's 3/8" 50 thou gauge ,70 drive lengths for a 20" bar .Readily available through Baileys or just about anywhere that sells chains .

That saw was made up until 1994 so in terms of old which is relative it's not that old .For the displacement they are a tad heavy but in good tune they will cut just about as well as any new saw in stock form unmodified .

As far as oil mix it will run on about any ratio from 32 to 1 to 50 to 1 .Use your own discreation on that I've already riled the Amsoil crowd enough  :D

Al pretty much nailed it. There are several online places that specilise in MAC parts. :) Very popular saw and very good strong motor. :) Only draw back they were designed after a shipping crate the bar/chain was added later :o There nick name was Mac cinder block :o Good saw enjoy ;D

The 600 series of McCulloch is probably the most underrated saws of all times by people who have never seen them let alone operated them .

Other than one PT Barnum type on flea bay who manages to fetch upwards of 400 bucks for them they generally are in the 75 dollar catagory .Now that's a lot of firewood cutter for 75 bucks .

Repair parts are inexpensive in relation to most other brands .About the only things that go bad and that rarely is the oil pump and ignition coil .Both in the 25-30 dollar price range for a new one .Now of course some people try to get more than that but how successfull they are who knows .

Now I personally would not spend the money and effort to do major repairs because of the low valuation but minor stuff it's well worth the effort.

I've owned my PM 610 since the early 80's .In all that time a fuel line and oil pump .I do believe the pump merely gave up the ghost from the saw sitting unused for 6-7 years when I lived in town because it wasn't needed .

Good saws , just a little heavy.  If it still has a muff screen make sure it's not clogged.   Steve
