I had a customer call me wanting some short logs sawn.  I told him that I am always up for a challenge.

At any rate, he had 9 small pieces of cherry, and what I think was some type of pine, the biggest may have been 12", and they were between 24 and 30 inches long.

I placed a short 1x5 or 1x6 (not sure on the dimension) parallel to the bunks on top of the turner.  it fit right into the bracket that is welded to the frame as can be seen in the second photo.

this worked really well, after trying several other ways to secure the short piece.  I also spanned the backstops with a 4x4 to keep it from rolling off the back side.

Never went that short, but don't blame you, it's fun, and goes quick,  david

I prefer to charge by the job.  My basis for estimation is to start with the scaled volume, add in any mileage fees, and go from there.  For odd jobs, I make an educated guess to how long it will take me to complete the job and attempt to make what I consider to be  a reasonable profit.

For this job, I estimated about an hour to an hour and a half to do the 9 "logs".

sometimes it is best to do a small job for free, that's good advertising.

I have some bar type furniture clamps.  I lay a 4x4 on the bunks, and then drilled holes through the metal bars.  Ran screws through the bars into the 4x4 to hold them in place.  I can cut anything from 4" to 48".  These work great for walnut limbs, maple crotches, odd pieces of burl or whatknot you find from time to time. The hobby workers LOVE these pieces.  I turned several odd short limbs into 50 dollar bills in my pocket with my lil clamps over the winter.
