What used saw could I get for about $500-600?

Hi Guys, just recently signed up and I am in Australia, I have a few questions if anyone can answer them regarding used chainsaws, My 62cc chainsaw died and wasn't worth fixing so I am looking around for a very good condition used chainsaw either Husqvarna 372/576/390 XP size  or Stihl MS460-MS660 hopefully around the $500-600 mark.

So the question is....Am I in the ball park figure or is what I am after going to cost higher?  It appears that I have to also allow about $250-300 on top of that for delivery to here. Obviously cheaper is better due to my limited budget. I have to keep it under the AU$1000 price overall otherwise I will have to pay import duty as well as G.S.T. which would add another $300 if I exceed the limit which I could not afford.

My main use is and will be for slicing out bamboo poles in the middle of the clumps so main requirement is that it should handle at least a 24-28" bar to reach inside. The second and increasing use will be to cut large logs for turning on a large wood lathe that I made, which can spin a 1m thick  log, so would like that saw to have the power to cope with our hard Eucalyptus trees easily. From what I gather, any of those model I listed should do that well.

Over here in Oz these chainsaw are extremely expensive and used ones are well and trully overpriced for their years and condition (in my opinion). Any opinions or advice?

Brand new.....probably not going to happen in that price range.
Used.....Possibly.
Porting usually runs around $250+ s/h

buy something on ebay from a seller that ships internationally?  Locally I can buy almost whatever for that price, stihl 362 to huskie 3120.

I'm a tech at a saw shop ,i used to like husq. but to me there new stuff is  not as good ,just my thoughts.... i say stihl ms 362 24'' or echos new 600 p series and echo now carries 5 yr warranty!!!

I feel for you Ed,but I guess that's the price to live in such a beautiful part of the world.Buying a used chainsaw can be tricky as few users will part with a good running saw.You hopefully can find a company going out of business or a widow selling her husbands saw.If you can work on saws yourself you have a leg up as parts from someone like Baileys are light and probably not that expensive to ship.Good luck Mate. Hi Stumpjumper83, do you have any contact names or numbers of suppliers to call to get a good price on a saw and who will ship overseas? I have sort of set my mind on either a Husqvarna 372XP or a Stihl 460 with a 24-28" bar which should be more than adequate for my needs, preferably the Husky. Tried the ebay idea still haven't heard back from the majority of the suppliers. Of the two that did reply, one couldn't give me a price on postage and the other doesn't send offshore. However both had the 372xp close to US$800.

What about buying new from baileys either an echo or a Dolmar in the 50-60cc range? I couldn't imagine taxes and freight being that bad, but then again I don't live down under either.

Problem with Echo and Dolmar in Oz is the servicing and spare parts, I do not think that Dolmar is in Oz, I think that it is Makita only here and they specifically have a section on their website about importing from overseas that they may not be able to supply parts. I take that to read ... we won't supply you with parts if you import our products here!  Echo is distributed by Allpower, which in my opinion aren't very good here as I have had dealings with them before trying to get parts for my my Shindaiwa line trimmer which they also distribute.

As for the taxes and duties, I have to keep it well under the $1k total price including freight and all currency conversions as it then attracts another $300 in charges once it hits that mark. Hence the reason for Stihl or Husqvarna brands as they are a lot of agents here but prices in Oz are expensive ie; a 576XP is about the $1700 mark here and the 372XP is not available here as it has been superceded. My local Husqvarna agent is trully woeful but I do know a good one from whom I bought my large Husqvarna ride-on mower and I am happy enough to travel to, and the local Stihl agent is good but charges like a wounded bull. Either way there are plenty of agents for those two brands.
