I have another ID request.  This wood is very straight grain, slightly heavier than Maple, and has a distinct darker color grain in the center of the log (most noticeable in the first picture).

Thanks again,
Baja

I'm thinking this one is Red Elm?  What do you guys think?

baja- are you sure it isn't maple?  Is there a reason you've dismissed that as an option?

Jeff

Looks like maple to me. I never saw any elm that split that clean and straight.

looks like sugar maple to me as well, not elm tho.   not best photos but ...    Any leaves to look at or brush left around with twigs on them?   Perhaps some small stems sticking out some of the firewood.>?

Bark definitely looks black oakish but the wood looks more like red maplish.  I am not seeing any yellow close to the cambium so I will go with red maple.

Couldn't see any rays in the pictures, but was also thinking oak. I find young bark easier to separate than on old trees. The piece of wood there, in photo 2, that has the grey bark, my big old yard rock maple(s) have the same bark pattern. In fact the sugar maple bark around here in farming country has old bark that looks different than those growing on dry sandy till. It would be hard pressed to find a really old one on a woodlot for starters. The big old ones are on crown or 'were' in town water preserves until towns went to wells and towers and cut down all their woods.

Ha, since the OP did not ask the species, just the "wood" it is very obvious that it is all "Fire Wood".   :)   :D
