The fella I have been buying my KD oak from is moving out of state and selling his Nyle L200. I have a consistent need for KD oak in the rough for the semi rustic chairs that are my bread and butter income. When he moves, my material will be 35 cents/bf higher and a half hour further away. Add this to the fact that I have a sawmill and it seems to make sense to buy it even though it means building a chamber for it and going further into debt.
My question is this: is this the right type of kiln for my needs? 4000bf of oak will last me a long time, even 2000bf will keep me going for many months. So I am thinking about what else I would like to dry. Other than the oak, I probably would not do a lot of 4/4, maybe a few loads a year of mixed hardwoods- cherry, walnut, etc. I do have an interest in drying thicker stock, though- 6/4 up to 12/4, for instruments and other custom woodworking. From what I have been reading here, the DH kilns might not be the best for thicker stock. Also, I have heard mention of a "discontinuous vacuum" kiln which is supposed to be better for the thick stuff, but will it also meet my 4/4 needs?
Thanks,
George

Hi George. Don'T know about the DH Kiln, but, we will be starting our discontinuous vacuum kiln real soon. We too have a need for 12/4 and 16/4, besides our 4/4, so, we will be giving feedback, but, maybe not before you have to make your financial decision. ::) :-/

What exactly is this creature? I assume it is something put together from various parts, but what are those parts?

Check the posts in this topic and read about the parts and all. It was one of the first discussions on this page. LOTS of stuff describing the system. We are going to use a large Propane Tank.
