Just got off the phone with the county Ex. and they have not lost their mind and it is wonderful.
I can use trees off my property to build my daughters home and all is good. Yes I have to get permits as all places but they are using common sense and that is wonderful to see.

Good to hear . In my part of rural SW MO their are no building codes at all. Closest thing is septic codes. In some ways it is nice but in other ways not so good . I have yet to hear of a shoddily built house falling down here like in some areas with codes and inspectors who were bought off , Ray.

Thats great news for you! I called the local inspector and asked if I could build a pole barn from my saw materials and he said no.

I would have never thought that you couldn't. What would be the reasoning? Lack of grading?

One alternative is to contact the Southern Pine inspection Bureau in Pensacola and ask about having your lumber graded.  But I think you'll find that isn't cheap!
Another is to ask your local inspector if Florida Statutes Chapter 553.73 (10) (c) applies to you.

                    (10) The following buildings, structures, and facilities are exempt from the Florida Building Code as provided by law, and any further exemptions shall be as determined by the Legislature and provided by law:
(a) Buildings and structures specifically regulated and preempted by the Federal Government.
(b) Railroads and ancillary facilities associated with the railroad.
(c) Nonresidential farm buildings on farms.

This is not a complete list of exemptions; I didn't want it to be a yard long.

It seems city codes and rural codes vary quite a bit,  glad you can proceed!    david

just_sawing, I am so glad you get to use your own lumber to build. I find it disturbing you had to ask to see if it was legal. I too live in an area where you can still build using your own lumber. I still have a hard time accepting the fact that intelligent people will let some bureaucrat decide what, when, where, and how they will do anything. Sorry for the rant.

Less liberty in Liberty TN.
Found today that Dekalb county has joined the inspection.
All isn't as bad as it could be. If the wood is inspected to be #2 or beteer and under 21 percent MC an inspector can grade and sign off. This means a 12 week class next summer and about $12k outlay by the time I stay in a hotel for 12 weeks and pay $2500.00 for the school.
This means that the operation will also inspect for people to be able to build.
