with carry case and two extra chains purchased from friend who couldn't get it to run steady.  Looks like it has hardly ever been used, chains look new and only one was used and dull.  Brought it home and after an hour of looking for my gas jug, it fired up on the fifth pull and ran fine.  I think he is slipping.  Does anyone know when these were made?

Just a guess, but in the 60's would be mine.

1964 i was strip cutting swamp Spruce with a C-9 Homelite. I saw my dad coming down my strip carring something blue. When he got up to me he was trying to hold it behind his back, then he swang it around and said try this. I grabbed it, it felt and looked like a toy. Dad had it gased up and ready to go, so i cut 10 or 20 sticks with it while dad ran the mearsureing stick.
These were good saws, i had all the modles over the years. With 16 inch bar and a full chisel chain it will keep you busy.

What color? They changed from blue and white to red around 1970.

In our neck of the woods back in the day before the Swedish Husqvarna, Jonsereds and Partners invaded........ the Homelite 900 series were the king of the woods.
Our loggers even preferred the Homelite over the Stihls at that time.

Except for the color, that saw looks just like my pioneer 1200A.

Your Pioneer along with Remington, Lombard and others were shameless copies of the Homelite. It was an excellent design for it's time.

1964 was a good year with the introduction of the XL Homelite amongst other innovative machinery. Notably the Pontiac GTO and the concept pony car the Ford Mustang.

Probably more  Homelite XL's sold around the world then any other saw.

Haha, I picked up a Super XL a couple years back because it was cheap, ran and I wanted an old saw or 2 to have around to play with on occasion. I ran it twice since, it sounds awesome but the vibration is something else. My hats off to the guys who ran those old saws all day, that's for sure.

I know what you mean about vibration. I used the 1200 to cut all my wood for 12 years and then as a part time saw for another 10. Should have at least worn some padded gloves.

I bought a new 08-S back in 66, it had a 3/8 chain. This was the smoothest saw i ran that wasn't rubber mounted and the quietest saw. It purred like a little kitten, but no balance it was like holding a battier with a bar sticking out of it. But they were very dependable.

I think the first red XL had a auto oiler, then the red and green XL-15 had more snap to it. We had two of them, fun little saw to cut with back in the day, down fall was they didn't hold enough gas. I liked the XL-850, lots of power.
