Trying to reinstall the intake valve on an Onan P224, exceeding the MDPH (Maximum DanG's Per Hour).  >:(

Any tips? Any special tool to hold the keeper in place while you release the spring?

We used to use grease! Not sure if the Onan is the same as conventional 2 piece keepers.

BC, yes, they are conventional keepers. The problem is lack of space to work, they're in a really tight recess in the casting. I've been using hemostats to place them. There is not enough room to put them in by hand, and I'm a little wary to try. One slip of the compressor and instant finger ground meat...

Thats the challenge to try and get them stuck in place, then get fingers and tools out of the way. I always recommended to put shop rags or something over top to catch parts if they did not catch properly. Also, give the end of the valve a tap with a dead blow or soft face hammer once you have released the compressor to ensure the keepers are intact.

Good luck.

I've placed tricky keepers with a blob of grease on the end of a curved dental pick.  And also walked one keeper around from the easy side of the valve stem to the side with poor access. (Not on your motor, but on others with tight work clearances).

That is how I did it. I also learned to stuff a paper towel in the oil drain back hole on the horizontal twins after dropping a keeper ::).

A small pickup magnet is your friend here. Done it many many times.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe two of them, handled like chop sticks...

Any chance of a few photos?
I'll be doing the same thing this winter and the talk of hemostats and magnets has me scratching my head.
Thanks in advance . . . .
