Stuck at work again with some serious issues on the Port M/E, figured I would post some pics. Next week hopefully back in the woods.

Thats a 2000hp 8-710 EMD, hopefully we will know tomorrow if we have to rip the whole front end off or not.  :D

You could have 16 of em to do. Look on the bright side. The rig I'm on now has Cat's. I kinda miss the rumble of the EMD's.

Got the whole front end torn off today, the welder is coming tomorrow, and setting up his milling machine for the block repairs. Im leaving this in more "qualified" hands come monday morning thank god.
There are still a few 8-1/8 Fairbank Morse engines around, was on one this summer in Troy NY, few of them still running the canal. An OP takes some time to wrap your head around.

Just 1 per cylinder. Thats a unit injector, I dont know what a 710 factory one costs, I know a 645 eco injector was 1200 a few years ago, probably double that for these.

Thats Mike, milling down the block face. He travels all over the world just welding and machine work on these engines. I posted these pictures because these are basically a detroit on 100x steroids. Same principal.

I bet Mike makes pretty good money doing that. Any close ups of what he is doing.

he had to weld up the section where the cam stub bearing retainer goes. She broke 2 bolts then started a chain reaction of destruction. My relief caught it before it got bad. Yeah he was telling me about being in Romania this spring doing a boat.

he has a magnetic mill, did a nice job.

thats my home away from home.

A couple of the boats sitting across from us. Ive gotta find more time to get better logging pictures, the boats I have plenty of time to goof off.  :D.  You would think with people still out of work we could find employees who last, we go thru deckhands like toilet paper. 400 a day, and paid vacation for the winter and they just dont make it.

I never heard of a magnetic mill and I have owned a machine shop for a long time. Must be sort of like a mag drill. I guess everything he welded up was cast iron. Remachined the bearing hole and the surface around it. Very interesting. How long did it take him to do all of that?

It was a smaller mill with a large magnet on the base, had a seperate power supply for the base. He welded on it slowly over 1.5 days, to not distort the block. Unless im wrong, that block started life as a few chunks of steel, nothing cast on the block itself. EMD made 12 of those engines during WW2 made entirely from stainless steel for the navy minesweepers. Im finally getting to go for the next 2 weeks of training on these in January, should be lots of fun.
