I posted the pics and stated it was a painted up auction special a few days ago . Anyway I got the steering cylinder swapped out and put my engine side covers on off one of my other broke down 440's and headed to the woods. Winch worked okay first couple of pulls and then as it would not pull much at all and brake would not hold much.

Checked brake band and it was dry and not to worn and then discovered that the brake release will hardly move when lever moved to release. The linkage is in good shape and actuator valve working fine but winch does not seem to have much hydraulic pressure.
Brake is adjusted properly and winch will pull a little once in a while if you play with it long enough. Took a few hours to yard about 12 big walnut trees .

Drained and refilled with fresh hy-tran oil and new filter as well .If I cant get her going tomorrow going to have to do another transplant off my other machine as I am way behind on my jobs with a month of downtime.

As always a big thanks in advance for any help offered. I have both shop and parts manuals as well,Ray.

Wish I could help, I have been inside those winches a bunch. But you have named everything I would have told you to check. Maybe a problem with your control valve??

Control valve acts like it is working just not enough pressure to push the springs enough to release brake . It does release the brake a bit better on the winch in .
Starting to think the pump is shot because the longer you run it the weaker it gets.

Also notice very little fluid flow when I crack the line that runs to filter.

Could it be the seals on something on the winch or winch motor if it has one. I've never worked on a skidder but I have worked on a lot of hydraulics. If you or someone could post a hydraulic diagram I could be more helpful. I'm no engineer but I've worked on more than my fair share in a industrial setting.

If you have got a working winch on a parts machine, you can probably have them switched out faster than our poor dumb hind ends can troubleshoot it ;)

I had the same problem with my 540A who has a 3305winch on it. Can be two things, pump will not built up enoght pressure (on mine it needs 1000psi) or what happend to me, control valve is bypassing some of the pressure. Mine raised to 700psi after the valve so it just released brake a little bit and the winchclutch had not enought pressure on the plates, so little force to pull. can you atach a gauge anywhere? Manual should told you where.

teakwood you stated exactly how mine is acting . It has a port on top to test pressure . I will get a gauge and hose set up tomorrow and test it .

oh so you maybe have the same winch. conect the gauge to this port on top of the winch and rev the engine to 1500 rpm and engage the lever to winch in. it should rise fast to at least 950psi. if its lower its ether pump or valve or a leak (brake or clutch pistonseals)

dose it release if if you bring the engine rpm up? the brake band dose not move much only a little. if the line pull is low the clutches may be slipping. . if the pump needs to be replaced the winch needs to come off

The control valve was in good shape and very little pressure at the test port so decided must be a bad pump. Pulled the winch off my other broken down 440 I posted about with the hydraulic issues we gave up working on for now and got it mounted and ready to work in the morning.
Thanks all for the help,Ray.
