Noob question alert. . . Do you saw the logs into boards like the picture and leave them on the mill or are you re stacking them after you cut them to take a pretty picture?

Thanks!

They were not restacked; pic was taken as the lay after sawing. The individual boards did not cup to the side and I wanted to show that; I am not always so lucky.

I am trying to get an idea of whether the tree builds more tree on the inside or outside of the arching trunk.  So if I'm on the inside of the trunk, will it expand or contract to relieve the stress?   I've seen a few examples and it's still not clear to me.

That is a very good and probably basic question but I don't know the answer. I bet others do.

There was a long treatise on tension and compression wood recently which made me realize the subject is much more complicated that I ever realized. I did not try to digest it. Gene Wingert was the poster, I believe. Maybe the answer is in there, but hopefully, someone will post a direct answer soon.

BTW, good sawing job on the log. (The date on the photo was 2004. Have you been sawing that long?)

Hi Bob,

No, it's just that the camera doesn't like the New Year!  I've only been cutting since Nov.

I guess the best way to learn about the stress/tension is to saw curved logs, but I'll never remember next summer which ones curved which way!  :-\
