Warning, LOTS of pictures. Lil was on camera duty  :D

So, you combine a long weekend, a niece's  5th birthday, and a fallen tree.  ;)

As the choice was a 5 year old  fairy princess party, or limbing a tree....

So next day we where ready for an early start. Except except all the crew, and more importantly the tractor driver had stayed up most of the night celebrating the birthday. But they made an appearance for Brunch  :D

Anyway, once the crew were on deck and semi-functional...

With a brief break to give the kids tractor rides  :D

And finishing the limbing of some of the top logs.

OK, I'll let you work out the diameter of this one.  :D

Unload the mill and lets get the real party started.

We had planned to drag the butt log out and buck it on the flat. Wasn't going to happen  :D Buck it where it lay.

But after slicing of a lot of rot on the first log, and making some stickers, we get into the good stuff.

That's more like it.

Meanwhile the crew get the butt log out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXjtKXxxUTY

And we try and work out what to do with it.  :D

I worked out it was sort of triangle shaped, and if we stood it upright on the smallest edge we could mill it.

So we move the mill

Yup it fits.   ;D

Brief conference as to how to proceed  ;)

But I can safely say, this is about the max log size for Peterson Jr  :D

But cutting some 4x4s got it whittled down.

Then we went back to the bottom slab from the first log.

Flipped it over

And laid it on the part sawn log. This lets us cut the other side, and leave a 2 or 3" live edge slab

Then it was getting close to dark O'clock

Nice pictorial!  So after all that work, what did you cook on the barby?  All the best, Rob.

It's Monterey Cypress. A lot of them were planted as shelter / ornamentals around farms 60-90 years ago. They are starting to get over mature now and need to come down. This one had a completely dead top so Nigel had it taken down for safety reasons. A wise decision after you saw how punky the top part of the tree was.

Don't worry, the BBQ was running and we were well fed  :)

Nice Ian.

How does the Peterson JP compare to the chainsaw mill you have?

FYI the youtube video you have uploaded is set to private and it doesnt work. You need to go into your youtube account and set the video settings as public and then it should work  ;D

We are glad you are getting some use out of the JP. Chris was wondering where his invite was? I hear he's pretty good on the barby!  lol

And thanks for sending us the link on Facebook :)

Cheers

Ianab

No goats were harmed during the sawing of this log.  :D

I think it's Annabel's huge horse that's being mistaken for a goat.  ;)

These guys were new arrivals, so they were safe too. Can't say the same for their predecessors. They were tasty  ;D

Just checked the video, it says public  ???

OK, looked from another machine, and it's not there...  I've reset the public setting and now it shows up, so try again. Some sort of glitch with Youtube maybe

Only thing I miss is the extra log size the old frame had. That log maxed out Jr, and it only worked because we could stand it up tall like that. Other than that, the power, reliability and relative quietness of the 4 stroke engine is a BIG improvement.

East coast?
Ian do you ever get down south of Patea and do any milling?
Reminds me of growing up in Tirau,my first intro to milling was a Varteg mill doing all the Mac's on our farm for sheep and cattle yards, then soaking them in creosote.
Cool wee mill, like to see it maxed out

Ianab

BIL lives near Taihape, so neither coast  :D

My wife Lil grew up in Patea, and still has lots of family there, but not done any milling down that way.

Hobbies and Interests

Interests revolve around my partners love of sawmills! - Hence being his NUMBER ONE OFFLOADER - Myself - I like the smell of sawdust. If I had my choice I would have BIG MACHINERY - who wouldn't want their own combine harvester and an 18 wheeler (Scania)
