Been taking short Poplar logs....... I lightly run the chainsaw down the login some of my projects.......take a few tools......loosen the bark and it peels right off.

I lay the bark flat on stickers and will let it dry. This fall I will use it some of my projects.

Then the naked Poplar log will be sawn into bench slabs. Poplar is FULL of water this time of the year.

You gonna side something?

Gonna use it on tables. It will be framed in and go around the apron of the table.

Here's a pic of Poplar panels in a bathroom.

Ever made a berry bucket out of it?

Nope....but I'll try. I'll look it up on the net. This is actually the first time I've done this. The hardest part is NOT to damage the bark with equipment.

Poplar siding seems poplar popular in the mountain areas of North Carolina.  Should be a good market for it.

Post,

How wide do you leave the bark sections? Do you sticker and weight the top to try to get it to dry flat or accept the curl? I am cutting poplar off my place but have not thought about saving the bark.

I'll get a pic when I get a chance....I deleted it by mistake.
I take the whole Poplar sheet and lay it flat on stickers. then put stickers on top of the bark the some 4x4's on top of the top stickers. Once it dries, I'll just saw it up on the table saw.

The summer before I was a senior in high school I cut a car load (train car) of sap peeled poplar.  Just felled the trees and took a chain saw an cut a groove through the bark full length of the tree.  Used a spud made from a broken leaf spring to peel the bark off of the tree full length.  I then cut into 100" lengths and loaded it onto a dray.  I hauled it out to the landing and stacked in about 6' high and 100' long.

I got enough money selling the pulp to buy a trombone that I still play on occasion.  Oh the things we did when we were young.

Sorry no pics.  No one had any idea what a digital camera was.

There seems to be a certain time of year when each of the tree species will peel easily.

Gotta be careful handling those peeled logs Dave, they're slipperier than a wet baby!

When my inlaws started wintering in Az last year my FIL joined a woodworking club where they live (you should see their shop  :o) and started making wood carvings.  He uses cotton wood bark which is very plentiful around here, I'll have to get some pictures, he's really quite good at it for no longer than he's been doing it.
