The logger brought me this dead standing pine log that I needed to get some wide boards out of and it was showing a metal stain on the butt end grain.

I sawed on it for a while to get it down to a reasonable size and then took a chance and sawed on the face where the nail was:

It took a while for the metal detector to read the nail but it finally did and with a couple of chops with the axe I found it.
And was able to pull it out without chopping the head off the nail.

As the log was 12' 10" long, I was able to saw off the chop spot and still get a 12' 4" board for the order. I really lucked out on that.

When you are dealing with metal in logs, luck counts.   8)

Several years ago my brother-in-law wanted me to cut a mantle from a cedar tree. The tree was about 10 " in diameter and came from a location near the house and right beside the driveway. From the location, I was sure there was sufficient metal in the tree to make a run to the scrap yard worthwhile. Metal detector couldn't locate any metal and I figured it wasn't working. So cautiously, I began the cut. I did not find any metal at all in the tree. That must be one for the record book.
