Old saw sharpener

I have an old Wood-Mizer saw sharpener that I got with my used 1992 LT40 when I bought it about a year ago. I set it up and started using it the other day.  I'm wondering if I could use one of those new CBN grinding wheels on it and change out the water bath for oil.

I'm probably grinding quite heavy in this clip but I didn't really know what I was doing yet.

Some of the blades I got with the mill had not been sharpened properly.

It looked like someone had ground them with a die grinder.  It took quite a bit of grinding to get it back to where it needed to be. Almost 3hrs. I'd get it going and go do something else and then come back and check on it, adjust it and go back to what I was doing. 

It probably wasn't worth all the effort but I did learn the controls quite well and it was time well spent if only because of how much I learned.

Darrel, I would be concerned with the increased power requirement for the CBN wheel. The old drag sharpeners work well especially if your a small time miller and not in a big hurry. If you could get past sales people ask W-Mizer they would know. Frank C.

I believe "Petefrombearswamp" uses an older W-M drag sharpener and converted to the new CBN type wheel.

NOTE:  If you slow the feed speed on your sharpener, you will be allowing the sharpener more time to contour the gullets on your blades!

Two problems with the cbn wheel...It grinds the entire profile all at once, no dragging, thus requires a different cam.   2 the grinder motor on the older sharpeners is a wimpy little 12 volt job, not enough power to run a cbn wheel. I have an older drag type sharpener that I sorta up-graded. Put a bigger 110 volt ac motor on it and a few other minor changes. I mix a little veggie oil in with the cooling water, seems to help and it cuts down on the rust problem..There's a post on here somewhere with pics..

There are CBN wheels that are narrow and can be used well with the old style sharpeners.  The advantage of them is not having to dress and shape the stone.  I like mine very well.

I have the same sharpener, the PO used ATF to sharpen blades and I do the same , so no problem in switching to oil with your sharpener. Never could under stand why people want to dump water on metal..

I was wondering about changing to a CNB wheel.
Would you mind sharing where you bought the CNB wheel and the part number?

I have gotten a few narrow CBN wheel from these guys, they work great!!  I'll have a youtube video soon showing the use of there wheel with the old drag sharpener.
