Charlie, you fellas were lucky. I had a piece of 1 x 6 x 3' hanging in my classroom for 30 years.  On the handle end was enough room for two hands and the other had 4 3/4" holes to cut down wind resistance on the upswing.  I always told the kids that "The Paddle", as they called it, was aero-dynamically designed. :D :D You know, I never had to use it in all of the 30 years.  It merely had to hang on the wall. : ???
