Spooked - hit a nail - OUCH !

After about 5 years of milling with our circular mill ( Waterous Pony 1868 patent) - demonstration sessions only - not for production, we hit a nail.
Not a big honker- but big enough to damage about 10 teeth. We have a 44 in diameter blade.

It was the last cut of the day, taking the last slab off to make the cant - was a nice log too.

And today , we sharpened the blade ( Andrus jig) and made sure that all the teeth were within about 10-15 thou of each other in height.

We took the   first cut after all that and WHAM - another nail.

That cant will be our nail driving contest log at our next show ( July 2016)

I've been told about the bang that happens, but experiencing it for he first time is surely memorable.

Also, what folks don't tell you is that the blade is instantly dull and starts to load up the engine and may bog down a bit when you're trying to get through the cut.
After shutting down, I checked the blade disk and it was not even warm.

Oh well, another " learning experience"

Sorry to hear that. I bought a metal detector to find the ones I know are there but bet I don't check every log.

I've found a few nails in my planer. It really wrecks the blades.

I'am super fussy what goes on the circular mill, anything questionable gets cut on the band mill where I can limit my losses. The reasonable price of bands makes it practical to cut yard trees. Frank C.

Sure does...watched the sparks fly today on my last cut, ruined a blade and 2 slabs...but they were all pretty spalted, wormy maple, so dealing with a wrecked band blade is not so bad...

A link for them? I have to investigate anything like that. I would like to get one, but I have a CRT-D ( pacemaker) and I can't get close to a cheap one that spreads it's beam.

My job is using them & I've been told that that is a myth. My company buys really cheap junk & I have used them on several people with pace makers along with other devices implanted in their body. However I'm not suggesting you do anything against what your doctor has told you. I don't use them on anyone that refuses because they fear them for any reason. It sure does make it uncomfortable for me & I'd assume them as well when they refuse tho.

When I have questionable logs. I set them aside for a month or 3. Then I use an ice scraper and the bark peels right off.
I have removed a 5 gallon bucket full of hardware this way.
I use a Jonsered chainsaw mill on the ones I am still unsure of.
The circle mill has not been hit but I have ruined more than a few chains.

Ouch times 2 when you hit a electric fence insulator it will brake the bit holders and crack the saw. Steel stiff is bad but glass is scary.

I'm using the GARRETT PRO-POINTER .... I use it before planning boards, working on restoration projects. I also use it relic hunting- sticking it in the dirt in all kind of weather conditions.
