A customer brought in a few short logs (3ft) that appeared to ave been laying around for several months.  After the first slab I realized he had something special.  I finished sawing the log but the customer was not impressed.  Finally he told me he is color blind.  That explains his unexcitement.

Am I correct that this is boxelder?

One thing to keep in mind with Box Elder is the red will fade over time. You can delay it by keeping it out of direct sunlight, but not stop it. Some artists will "augment" the color by trying to match it with something that is less prone to fading. My wife has experimented with Aniline Dyes and I believe airbrushing. I have also heard of someone using red chalk, but have never seen examples of that.
