found an ad on C.L. for a ms 390 with a twenty inch bar for $350. Assuming that it is in average shape would this be a good price?

That is steep, the usual on CL.  ::) You could probably find a lighter and faster MS361 for that kind of money.

That is the going rate for that model. I sell them for $360 with a new bar/chain and aftermarket cylinder.
Too many chainsaws, not enough wood.
Stihl, Husky, Craftsman, Mac, Homelite, Poulan. Some live here, some just passing through.

Get a used 361 or a new Echo Cs590 for $400, both are way better saws.  Steve

Here in New England that is a good price for that saw if it is in very good shape. You can find an 036/360 for that price. Even closer to $300. For $375 to $475 you can find a very good MS361. If you are looking for a good saw for firewood cutting on the weekends that 390 is not bad but I would offer $300

Offer $300 and meet somewhere in the middle if he wants to.  I have one and have used it hard.  I took it to work with me when I worked for a tree service because their saws were junk.  It cuts every bit as well as it did when new, or better.  I opened up the muffler and that woke it right up.  Loud but real fast.  I run a 28" bar on it and it pulls it just fine.  I have been thinking of woods porting it, but I don't know if I want to open it up.  It does need a good deep cleaning after 5 years of hard labor, so I might tear into it.  I use synthetic oil at 50:1

Too steep IMO for what it is. A fine saw, but I wouldn't pay 350 for one. Better options for the price.
Like others have said, look for a pro grade saw for similar money...
