The Stihl 044 is perhaps the last chainsaw I'm interested in investing in...and it looks like I'm pretty close nabbing one.
I spoke with an owner for about 20 minutes on a saw he had listed on Craigslist for $450.
He says it registers about 180 on compression, has new seals, rings, new piston, rebuilt carb.

Very knowledgeable and courteous guy...who use to run a small engine shop yrs ago and still does some tinkering & rebuilding.
All replacement parts are OEM...and he cleaned up the cylinder with cleaner and its ok.

From the pics it looks average...supposed to go take a closer look this weekend.
He will drop the price to $350 minus bar & chain PHO.

Anything in  particular to look for on an 044?  ???
My Stihl experience has been a couple of 034's, an 025 and a smooth/reliable MS 390.

Thanks
Reg

Well, if the serial number is above X28382283 it will be a 12MM wrist pin saw. Prior to that it will be a 10MM wrist pin saw. Supposedly the 10MM saws are a tad quicker, but I don't know that I would bet my house on it.

Any variety , they are a great saw. Tree service friend of mine still uses an 044 that I keep going for him and he can get anything he wants. Know telling how many saws he has new and old, but he uses the 044 mostly.

I think there a good saw,& for that price it sounds like a good deal.

Reggie,   is that the saw for sale up near Nashville?
If you  don't know where you're going, you'll probably end up somewhere else!
