I have stacks of timbers and want to strap a single layer together, or strap one layer to another.  The problem can be trying to fish the strapping between the stack or between stickered boards.  I finally got tired or fudging it and made a tool from a scrap piece of pine.  It's sort of like a needle.  A slit in the head to put the strap in.  The needle is thin, probably 5/16 or 1/2" thick and I had to make it shaped nice and put 1/8" roundovers on it and sand it smooth.  Works great!

Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!
If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!

Well, it's a bit more elegant than my "nail in the side of a sticker" strap threader :D :D.

I use something similar as per Kbeitz advice awhile back.  I painted mine blue and wrote RAMROD on it, so that it didn't end up in the scrap pile :D

one thing you gotta watch out for, if you thread it under a pack with the ramrod, always pull it out or to the side, cause one time I strapped the ramrod to whatever it was I was banding, most likely a slabwood bundle or pack of lumber.  I think I just left it too :D
Boy, back in my day..

My method is a 7' peace of plastic coated 1/4" cable, make a loop and push the ends through. Works but not the end all be all.
