Has anyone ever used a limbing tool of any kind for spruce pulp? I have looked at a few, but I am considering building one that looks like a pipe that wraps around a 9-10 inch log. I have been clearing old trails and fence lines, removing lots of saw logs, but even more pulp logs. The problem is limbing just takes the bulk of my time. I am only using a chainsaw at this time. I am using a 70hp tractor to skid. So I have plenty of power to pull limbs off. Just looking for some experienced answers to increase pulp production.

Build a stroke delimber.  Theyre pretty simple

A stroke limber is anything but simple. A pull thru maybe. With a pull thru you need power and speed

I will do a search for these tools, but does anyone have some pictures for reference? I don't mind building something, that seems to be the way I get what I want on the farm. However logging tools are newer to me.

This is a link a pull through delimber

google gate delimber, depending on what machine you are skidding with you just back the wood through the gate and then all you have to do its cut the top off at the appropriate diameter. fast, simple and multiple stems at a time.

Maybe a winch could pull stems through.

I think you may find that the proper technique will make a difference.  If you develop a system rather than just hacking limbs off aimlessly you will find it to be much easier.

I think you will beat your tractor to death trying to delimb with it. It has to be quite cold to do it very well with a skidder. As gman said you can limb softwood fast with good technique.

I dont think theyre much more complicated than a log splitter with some knives an extra circuit or two.

I see a lot of Danzco Pull Through Delimbers close here for sale that seem pretty simple.  My guess is you would need a grapple machine or log loader to make it real effective.

Yes I have a 3pth winch.
I am trying to get a few loads of spruce and balsam saw logs as well as pulp of both as well ready for June. That is when the log trucks start running full loads again here.
I will also be doing some poplar and aspen veneer logs and pulp.
I don't have a problem delimbing with a saw. I think I do a cleaner job then a delimber. Which is probably more important for the saw logs.
The problem is I am doing some clear cutting on my property. Restoring old fields and widening old skidder trails. So some of the wood I am cutting is small 8 to 10 inch buts. These small logs take a lot of time to delimbing with a saw. The larger logs I can clean up pretty quick. I have never cut a load before. I am guessing some where between 150 to 200 saw logs to a truck. At the rate I am going that will take a while. 8 hours this week end and I have about 45 trees ready to load. But 75% of them are only pulp quality. Which we all know pays poorly.

Get on You Tube then type in pull through delimber there is  yellow one called "KARSIS OY"
I think that is what you might like.

Thanks thats what I am looking for. Now to figure out how to make one.

It's not perfect, but a long 3/8 or 1/2" chain with a grab hook on one end, and a slip hook on the other helps. Fasten one end around a big poplar, wrap the chain around your skid and clasp with the slip hook, drive away. The chain tightens as you go, and it will shear off most of the limbs if it's cold. I did this on black spruce for the same reasons as you. As I said, it's not perfect, but it works pretty well. The price is right.
