The Delta Conservation District, a local unit of state government, is seeking interested applicants for a permanent forester position in the south-central Upper Peninsula.  The applicant must possess a minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in forestry from an accredited university.  Work will be performed under the technical guidance of the senior forester.

The forester position will be mostly field based focusing on education and technical assistance to private landowners.  The position will also have responsibility to assist private landowners in implementing a variety of forestland practices that are funded under the USDA Farm Bill.

RE:  FORESTER WITH METCALFE FORESTRY
Job Description for Forester Position in Grayling, MI

 
Metcalfe Forestry Co is a forestry consultant business established in 2002 and is based out of Grayling, MI.  We offer forestry consultant services to non-industrial private landowners.  We mostly work in the Northern Lower Peninsula but occasionally we work in the Upper Peninsula.  We have a well-established client base of private landowners as well as extensive experience with contract work for various government agencies and timber industries.  Our work is mostly composed of timber inventories, writing management plans and contracts, timber sale preparation, solicitation and administration.
 
We are opening a full time forester position for the right candidate who desires to work in the private sector with private landowners. As member of the timber industry, we are considered “essential workers” by the State of Michigan and are allowed to work provided that we continue to practice “social distancing”. The position is based out of Grayling, Michigan. Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, this job will primarily consist of field work with a lesser amount of office work that will be done at a remote location.
 
The type of field work will generally consist of timber cruising, harvest boundary placement, timber marking, & timber sale administration.
 
Most of the office work is: daily communications with clients and timber industry professionals, ArcMap & GIS mapping, writing management plans, contracts, bid prospectuses, website maintenance and scheduling.
 
We typically work a minimum of 40 hours per week; we pay hourly and have overtime hours available for fully trained employees. We pay drive time one way. New employees will sign a non-compete agreement. The compensation will depend upon applicant experience; please state your pay expectations in your cover letter.  A company pickup truck will be provided for field work. We offer paid vacation plus a flexible work schedule, an employee retirement plan and health insurance.
 
First round applicant must be able to demonstrate the following skills:
·      A strong work ethic under adverse weather conditions ranging from 95 degrees to -30.
·      Be willing to risk contracting Lymes disease, Covid-19 virus etc while at work.

·      Able to work alone with little supervision, must be self-motivated, well spoken, honest, and organized.
·      A two or four year forestry degree. Applicants with some forestry experience who are unable to complete their degree requirements due to their school shutting down are encouraged to apply anyways.
·      Experience or education with ArcMap and GIS work
·      Have and maintain a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
·      Applicant must be willing to live within a 30 minute drive from Grayling, MI.
·      Good writing and communication skills
·      Own a computer with Windows 10, Microsoft Excel and Word, and have internet access

The Michigan Forestry Assistance Program (FAP) provides private forestland owners with technical assistance and information regarding forestry, wildlife habitat, and related natural resource concerns, so that they may make informed decisions about the use and management of their forestlands. (“Landowners” include non-industrial private forestland owners, schools, local units of government, rural, and urban residents.) The forester position is primarily a field position.
 
The basic requirements for the forester position are:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university.
• Good communication skills (writing, public speaking, working with individuals of all ages).
• Computer proficiency Computer fluency. GIS and Microsoft Excel experience is highly recommended.
• Ability to read various types of maps (aerial, topography, soils) and navigate through properties, accordingly.
• Ability to assist Conservation Districts and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) staff to achieve deliverables as well as short - and long-term goals for the Michigan Conservation Districts and NRCS.
• A valid Driver’s License and a reliable vehicle.
 
Activities include:
• Serves as initial point of contact for non-industrial private forestland owners, local governments, etc., for forest management, wildlife habitat, other natural resource issues or concerns.
• Fulfills grant agreement requirements and deliverables.
• Provides on-site land examination and resource evaluation.
• Provides options regarding forest management.
• Provides options regarding wildlife habitat management.
• Compiles and submit quarterly reporting forms to MDARD, including required information.
• Prepares written follow-ups that may include appropriate handouts/materials, after visiting with landowners on-site or in the office, as appropriate.
• Provides advice on tree planting/reforestation for timber production, windbreaks, wildlife habitat.
• Provides diagnosis and advice on the control of insects, disease, and wildlife pests for individual trees and woodlands.
• Provides information and makes referrals regarding programs, agencies, organizations, and private sector interests that furnish technical and/or financial assistance for natural resource management activities.
• Maintains a good working relationship with other forestry assistance providers, both public and private.
• Provides technical input regarding species selection for the Conservation District’s annual tree, shrub, and plant sales. (Native species that are useful for reforestation, wildlife habitat, soil erosion control, etc.)
• Provides advice on the control of sedimentation resulting from forest management activities.
• Conducts demonstrations and workshops.
• Prepares correspondence, reports, news articles, newsletters, etc.
• Assists with preparation of the program documentation, including, but not limited to, annual grant application, Natural Resource Plan of Work, etc.
• Prepares regular, written reports to Conservation District boards (monthly).
• Pursues the designation of Certified Forester with Society of American Foresters (SAF).
A performance evaluation will be conducted annually. Training and continuing education opportunities will be provided.

Description
This position is a member of the OSB operation located in Grayling, MI and reports to the Raw Material Manager. This is a Full Time, Exempt position.
  
 Background:
 Position has responsibility to participate in the raw material procurement for the Grayling facility.  The procurement area is on the Eastern side of Michigan's lower peninsula and will require the successful candidate to live in Roscommon, Ogemaw, Iosco, Clare, Gladwin, or Arenac county. 
  
 Key Functions:

• Proactive safety practices to ensure personal, team and contractor safety compliance.
• Supply the mill with quality raw material, at or below planned costs, support targeted inventories, manage and promote positive supplier relationships. 
• Manage supplier contracts (wood quality, sourcing, etc.) and provide direct technical assistance to landowners (i.e. timber cruising/appraisals and marking).
• Locate and mark property lines in compliance with legal description and applicable agency requirements. 
• Assist suppliers and private landowners with stumpage procurement.
• Interface with landowners, contractors, and mill personnel to ensure accurate and continuous supply.
• Assist in procurement planning and strategy development.
• Assist Forestry Services Manager and Forestry Services Admin to ensure timely and accurate payments to suppliers and landowners.
• Ensure compliance with state and federal statutes, environmental requirements, SFI, and land stewardship.  
• Negotiate, prepare, and administer timber sale contracts. 
• Communicate and interface with landowners, contractors, government agencies, and community representatives; represent Company in public forums. 
• Ensure individual activities align with Company business ethics and Raw Materials team processes and business objectives.
    

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry or Associate degree in Forestry with four years of practical experience. 
• Strong team, interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.  
• Technical and business writing ability and public speaking experience.
• Excellent analytical skills with the ability and desire to work in a self-directed team environment.
• Strong computer skills and field experience in raw material procurement activities from private landowners to government agencies for a mill is preferred.
