Hi again. Can anyone tell me if my 028WB would accept a retrofitted chain brake? Apparently the earliest models don't have the ability to accept a retro kit. I was told if you show a picture of the clutch side hardware you can determine if it's possible.

Sorry I realized that the picture is worthless for diagnosis. Will send full inside view.

Also is it really worth the effort to locate a kit and install a kit?
Thanks for your help! Great resource for the DIY'er

Yes, saws were sold for many years without brakes, when the feature first came out we couldn't give them away.  However they go a long way reducing injuries from kickback. Maybe you could find a junked 028 with an  intact brake and switch it over.

Someone removed the brake band and tripping mechanisim. 028 came with chainbrakes since day 1 when introduced in the late '70s.

You're only option now is find another 028 for the parts. Or buy used parts from a supplier.
We had a sponsor here once named Chainsawer, don't know what happened to him. ???

It takes a few hard to find parts. I added a chainbrake to my early 028, so been there done that. For this crankcase as photo'd, the chainbrake band is the older open loop type, not the current cross-over loop type. The later 028 brake levers and such won't fit.

Most of these parts interchange with later 028,  042 and some 038 parts. Main parts are:
brake band: 1117 160 5400 reshaped for the 028 drum
lever 1: 1119 160 5000 use with lever 2: 1117 162 5005 or 1118 162 5001,
or MAYBE try the later lever with its pivot: 1118 160 5002 (I did not use this one)
handle mount: 1118 162 5005
hand guard: 1118 790 9100
spring: 1118 162 7901
There's also a couple of e-clips and screws.

One end of the open loop band fits into that funny little recess above the back bar stud.

Good Luck, took me about half a year to round up all the parts and then to make these work.

Well now here's a word of advice because I've been there .If you find the bones of an 028 with a good brake take a picture of it,several as a matter of fact .It might look simple to just remove and reinstall but it can be a little tricky .Just saying .
Fact I did the same brake change thing on an 042 and I think I finally got it after about the fourth try . .
