The Cutrine Plus ruined the seals in a hand pump sprayer I left it and didn't rinse out.

I was adding a bit of wood to the outside of the shop door, after seeing another dang bird make its way in. It was a tight fit so I needed to get on the ladder and whack it a few times with a hammer, causing a shark to bounce around on the inside. The shark is a bit unwieldy, so I took it off the header and set it on the floor.

I got the chunk of wood in place and when I went to put the shark back, unwieldy remember, and I dropped it on my face, smashing my glasses all over. Luckily, no bloody nose, but I had to make some major eyeglass readjustments. I also had a kid hand me the shark while I was up on the ladder rather than try to navigate it all...

When I got my sawmill I was told there where two kinds of people. those that had run into their log stops and those that hadn't yet . Yesterday I crossed to the otherside 3 times . Never saw outdoors in a blizzard :wink_2:

I did it twice in one day, then stopped trying to saw and waited for a better day.

My well received summation of the horrible events and tragedy of the affair:

The likelihood of sawing into the side supports, rolling a log across the mill with no side supports raised, sawing long wedges because you forgot to lower the toeboards, etc. is directly proportional to the number of people watching you at the time. These kind of things rarely happen when you are sawing by yourself with no witnesses around. :wink_2: :wink_2:

Yesterday I ordered chainsaw chaps for our pumpers and our brush truck.  I'm going to put together a new chainsaw training for the department.  We've had several issues lately. We had someone put the wrong chain on a saw.  Had another guy running a saw in the morning as they always do.  Apparently someone hadn't tightened the bar nuts and the bar and chain came off when re revved the saw.  Guys come into the fire service, but haven't necessarily had much experience with certain tools, especially chainsaw.  I'm going to cover normal safety stuff, but I'm also going to teach about gauge and pitch.
Eventually I want to teach some basic falling and bucking.

I don't think buying the right PPE for your crews and giving them some training is not a 'dumb thing', but yeah, some of the stuff that drove it might be.
There really isn't much fire service training for chainsaws beyond starting and running the saw. In my department we had so many tree service and logging guys we never really thought about it much.  A good class could be well used in many departments for sure. I took a logger rescue training class a few years back (sponsored by Bargemonkey thank you very much) on a working job site. That was for logger types, so partly search, partly patient care and handling, and partly victim recovery which I found the most interesting.
We learned ways to extricate patients without crushing them further when entrapped by trees. We used hand work as well as skidders and winches.  One of the more simple and useful things I learned was this 'locking cut'. When a victim is under a tree, cutting it to free him can cause more damage if not done correctly. Obviously, every situation is different, but this is handy to know.

You make your cuts in the order shown, This prevents the cut section from dropping. The cut section can either be lifted by hand or with the help of a skidder winch.
Of course, AFIK, my Pro-Board national certification as an FSI 2 is still valid. If you want to fly me down to run a class, I'd be happy to visit. ffcheesy

I was doing my annual spring equipment prepping.  This year I was going to change the fuel filters on my tractor.  I was able to slide both the spring clamps back with a little struggle.  On my back under the tractor, had the new filter with me, pulled the old filter out and was surprised by the spurt of diesel fuel.  Very quickly let go of the old filter, knocked the new one out of reach and covered the end of the hose with my thumb.  Now I am stuck under the tractor like the little Dutch boy with his finger in the dike.  I can't reach the replacement and don't want any more diesel on the garage floor.  I am in the third stall of the garage with a door between the garage and the house.  My wife finally heard me and retrieved the escaped filter.  Got it all back together, clothes soaked in diesel.

In the aftermath I had the "Doh" moment when I remembered/realized I should have just clamped the rubber line with my long nosed vice grips before I started.

Anyone have any good methods for getting the smell of diesel out of clothes?

I recently had the same issue when doing some emergency work in the field.  I took the clothes and soaked them in a bucket of hot water and soap.  No big help there but it did take out a lot of the oil.  Then in a new bucket I dunked and wrung out the clothes multiple times.  Then finally into the washer for two runs.

I thought I caught a whiff of diesel odor once or twice, but any strong overpowering smell was gone.  YMMV.

A couple of days ago I was out in the brush doing the usual clearing out of the woods that never gets close to being finished.  I end up getting stuck in various ways-can't go backwards over a downed branch, tire in a bog or ditch etc.  I am used to wrestling with the wheel so when it started acting up I didn't think much of it.

Then the tractor wouldn't do anything I told it to do. I discovered the left front was flat. Then the fun began anew.  Using the grapple, I pulled the tractor forward so that the wheel was clear enough for me to work on.  Then the long walk back to the garage to get the needed equipment, then driving the truck as close as I could to the tractor and then lug the equipment out there.

Get the tire off and head back to the garage to dismount it.  The tube had multiple holes and the inside of the tire had wire showing and a bunch of abraded rubber pellets inside.  The only saving grace is that the tractor is small so the tire and tube came to $120.

What's wrong with the smell of diesel?

I worked at the USMC Logistics Base in Albany GA for a few years and had a boss who was an old field Marine with the Amphibious Vehicles. He hated working an admin job. Every once in a while I'd see him open his second drawer down on his desk, stick his head in and breathe deeply. He'd rise back up, close the drawer and go back to work with a peaceful look on his face. I finally asked him one day "Major, what the heck are you doing?"

He pulled his drawer open so I could see his old AmTrack operators manual in there. He said when the BS got too deep he'd open the drawer, smell the diesel smell of his old ops  manual and tell himself "There is a Fleet Marine Force out there and I am going back" and it would get him through.

Lots of people had candy jars on their desks open for friends and co-workers to come share a peppermint or M&M or such but he was the only one I knew who had his filled with Rolaids and it was surprising how many people who came to see him to bum one off him.
