Looks to me like a good problem to have and good solution.

Maybe "Watcha sawing" could be made into a hard copy, like a chapter of a book. I believe others like me would buy a copy.

I would like to buy it also, just not sure I could afford the book or carry it.

All you have to do is click on the link. It's not going anywhere. The issue comes when new content is added and read, not when existing content is accessed to just read.

Whatcha Sawing has been a great topic since I joined the forum, and I've learned so much from it. A sincere thank you to Magic Man for starting the topic years ago and thanks to all that have continued to contribute to it to this point. Putting this topic to bed doesn't change anything for me. Thanks to Jeff and those that keep the Forestry Forum ticking we all still have the same great forum to share our sawing experiences on. I will continue to share my sawing experiences and photos, I hope all of you will too.

Is it possible to keep the initial photo so when we access with the legacy method of clicking the hyperlink and not a specific page number we see that initial cedar beauty?

With out a doubt that is my favorite thread and I agree, locking for now with a final link to the new thread would be perfect.

MM just got back from his condo gig, what a tough pill to swallow on the return.

That being said, MM is so important he Broke The Internet...coders couldn't even account for his greatness :)

@Magicman out of respect for you and your contributions, would you be willing to come up with a new title and start a new thread on what we are all milling?

Jeff's house, Jeff's rules, and I do understand about the software limitations.  That said, could we not have another What Ya Sawin thread?  Or threads?  I know we could all start separate threads, but it is honestly nice to have a thread such as the closed one.  Kinda like having an old general store to go sit a while and talk.  I've probably learned more from the side conversations that took place in that one thread than in most of the rest of the forum. And that's saying a lot cause there is a wealth of info and learnin' on the rest of the forum.  My thought is to have a what ya sawin March, April, May etc etc.  That way there would be some continuity but not overload the servers and software with too many posts in one thread.

Hey guys, I know I am a noob to this forum but my background before retiring was as an enterprise software architect serving several Fortune 500/100 companies.  I've used forums in a number of different industry verticals and some had tens of thousands of members and a topic could have hundreds of thousands of posts within a year.  I also worked with and designed software applications and databases that handled 30 million new records a month with sub-second response times.

With that being said and not knowing what the ultimate platform or hardware is that FF is sitting on, I would like to raise some questions so that maybe I could help with a longer term solution.  First, is the FF software 15 or 20 years old?  Has it been kept up to date with upgrades?  Is it possible that FF has outgrown the capabilities of the software?  Is the hardware a limitation?  Like is it someone's old desktop with Windows 3.1 running on it or is it something that is designed to handle network traffic?  How is the forum being hosted?  Is it out of someone's basement or is it with a professional hosting company?  Which brings up the obvious limitation, how is it financially supported?  Do the sponsors support the forum and are they willing to chip in for necessary upgrades?  All of these items will obviously have an effect on the performance of the forum.  Hopefully some insight into this might provide enough information to make some helpful suggestions.

If this is something that maybe shouldn't be publicly aired, then please PM me so we can have a constructive dialog about possibilities.
Thanks!

Actually this is what Jeff wants to avoid in the future.  Everyone bring your pictures and text to the FF in a new topic that you create.  That way the replies will be directed to the OP and the subject that he brought forth.  There were times in the old Whatcha Sawin' topic when a question was asked or statement made and it was questionable as to which member, picture, or reply it was directed to.  I will certainly agree that the old topic made it mighty friendly and convenient to check out what others had recently sawed.  Yes, I miss it.   :'(

As for me, the fever and chills are slowly subsiding.  I am eating chicken soup and drinking warm milk before bedtime.  My eyes are sunken and I am combating dehydration but this should improve as I take more intravenous drips.  My heartbeat rate and blood pressure are still low, but with the proper medication and exercise these should improve.  PatD says that I have a "far away" look in my eyes and seem distracted?  I have no idea what she is talking about because I have already used up over half of my new coloring book.

Magicman started a new topic.  I am going to ask, that in that topic you keep it to what the topic is about. If not, start a new topic. This will limit the size.  If you do not have time to explore for the richness that lies outside of one topic on the forum that has been posted over 2 decades, I don't know what to tell you other than it's your loss.

As for the basement remark, there ya go. Someone that has not taken the time to see what the forum is about and how it got here. It aint in one topic. The post, although I am sure was not meant to be so, was a bit belittling.  No, I'm not a software engineer. I'm an old worn out millrat that started a website that got popular.  I know what I know. I know that this is not a fortune 500 operation that has unlimited server resources that can drive a database of unlimited size. I know that on top of the costs of keeping this website up I atill need to make a living and that happens by keeping the website up.

As meager as it is, and as meager as my capabilities may be, this forum is still here.

Hey Jeff,
The post was never to belittle or disrespect anything or anyone on the forum. I was offering to help.  I am not sure you caught that part.  I laid out my credentials primarily to give you confidence that I had the skill set to help come up with a viable long-term solution.

Just trying to help make things better for everyone on the forum.

Jeff, I appreciate how you are addressing this issue.  The culture here (that you've created and fostered) allows you to come directly to us.  I like that.

As a former irdustrial arts teacher one of the mantras we continually reinforced was, "Use the right tool for the job."  With that said, from a user standpoint, the Forestry Forum seems to be running fine except for this glitch.  Doesn't seem like a reason to throw out a perfectly good tool.

I spent 10 years as the IT director for a school district and I saw issues like this occasionally.  If a large percentage of threads had the same number of posts and hits the Whatcha Sawin' thread had, it might be time to investigate server upgrades, hosting services and a more robust platform.  But this appears to be one thread causing the problem. I think you are doing this the right way.
