How much can a tractor winch pull?
« on: August 13, 2020, 09:58:52 PM »
I did some horse trading for a used 367 Norse winch a few years ago. Canít find much info on that model.

Iíve used it to haul more Volkswagen busses than logs but now that Iím actually using it in the woods Iím running up on its limits and wondering if itís out of adjustment, the clutch is worn or if itís just how it is.  My tractor only has 27pto hp, but the winch will hang up fairly easily.  Or at least I think so until I see I buried the log half in the dirt.  It seems 2 20 ft 20Ēdbh white pine is all it wants.  I can live with that but if I can turn a screw or replace a clutch I would do it.

The model 350 pulls 8000lb, the 450 pulls 10,500lb so you're probably right in the middle

I'm not going too much help. I seen my tear up rocks and roots and dig the ground up and keep coming. Than sometimes it won't move the same size log.  ???
Don't know it you are trying to winch in both logs at once?
I only winch in one at a time, if they are that big.

I think you are probably maxed out for that size winch.

Could be.  The winch seems to work fine and obviously has a safety overload.   Iím just trying to determine if I have something wrong or itís working as it should.

I concur with thecfarm, ive got the 450 behind a Ford 5030, 63hp pto and it can either plow thru boulders like its a super winch or snub up solid on just the smallest edge of a stump to the point it seems like two different sized winches some days.  But in general itll pull in much larger then i should be twitching out behind the ole ford on this land.

I just need to get my Timberjack repower project done and save the wear and tear on the tractor.

Sounds like your clutch is slipping?

If it is any thing like my winch (Norse 390) the leaver is spring loaded to limit the force on the engagement but the clutch can also be adjusted by tightening the large nut on the winch drum bolt. By tightening the nut you pull the frame together and reduce the clutch/drum clearance.

Perhaps making some kind of cone at the front of the log like this fella did with an old plastic barrel,

or buy one from the portable winch company,

always good to look at this video and think about cab protection
