Used 361 instead of my 291
« on: September 27, 2020, 09:05:10 PM »
Ok, still looking for a used pro saw.  I found someone near me selling an MS361 that he says is about 13 years old but not used a lot.  Comes with a Stihl case and 8 extra chains.  Guy says he is not a chainsaw guy and did use it much.  I'm guessing he didn't sharpen chains and just bought new chain each time it got dull.  Do you think $500 is high?

That is high for a used saw in my estimation but I'm cheap. It had better be in pristine condition.

Seems kind of expensive considering Stihl's US pricing on a 362CM looks to be only a couple of hundred more for a brand new saw that comes with a warranty and peace of mind that it doesn't have any history of misuse or hidden issues..
After all what used saw doesn't come with the claim of 'little use' or having been 'babied'?  ;D

Might be a good saw, you can generally tell if a saw has been used heavily just by the general wear and tear on it. It might have done about one days work a year and could still be in good condition. But I'd be starting at 50% of the new price and adjust up or down from there depending on the condition. If the spare chains just need a sharpen, then they are worth something as they are maybe only 5-10% worn out.

I am the 50 percent of less camp for a saw like that and it would have to be super clean. When it comes to saws I like new and and then I know how its been been maintained. I don't even refuel or oil with out blowing my saws off with compressed air. I will pickup used cheap saws once in a while tune them and sell or give them to friends. The only used saw I have bought for my self was last fall I was ready to buy a 661 and ran across a 660 a guy had bought new had the paper work and used it to take some trees down on a acreage he had bought and then it set in his shed. Saw still looked like new and its been a super saw but I got a great deal on it.

Thanks guys.  I thought 500 was high too. He said hes had lots of interest, but no one has come to give him money yet.  I'm guessing thats why.  I looked at the price of the 362 as well to compare to new.  I will decide on a price that i'm willing to pay and let him know where I'm at.

Unless you feel you need a saw to pull a bar bigger than 20" and really have to have a bigger displacement, a brand new 261CM isn't far off of what he apparently is asking actually.. so unless it is super clean and/or his price drops (a lot) I personally wouldn't consider it any sort of a good deal whatsoever!

I have thought about getting the 261 to pull my 20" bar better than my 291 does.  What I thought about the 361 is that it is the same weight as my 291, but can use an even larger bar if I need.  If I got it, I would use it normally with the 20" and switch to 25" occasionally.  I have an old 025 with 18" bar that has always served me well.

Well, I told the guy the most I was willing to pay was 400.  He was clearly insulted and said it would take 500 to buy it because he had 800 in it.  I told him I didn't mean to insult him.  He said no, he had had much lower offers.  My guess is that he wont sell the saw and it will just sit in his garage not getting used.

A new 362c-m is $750 (unless they've gone up).  Warranty, no mystery about past life.  May be a little lighter than the older 361.  $500 doesn't sound good.  $400 doesn't sound that good to me either.  I found the 362 to be well worth the price of admission, but we all have our budgets and comfort level.  You'd certainly be happy to be either in the 261 or 362 world compared to the 291.  But you already own the 291, so . . .

I would be concerned about all of the rubber hoses and all that stuff. 13 years old is not that old for a saw, but all the stuff around is rotting away. My 372 husky started to suck air, I don't work on them and the jug had to be removed at a tune of almost $300.

Buy a new 261 and 362 and be done with it. They are great saws and will last decades with reasonable care. The 261 is just the right size for most chores and the 362 will pull a 24" with a sharp chain if you only need a "big saw" every now and then.

I run an 18" on my 261 because it saves a little bending over. 16" is probably ideal for that saw and 20" would be too much IMO. The 362 is perfect for a 20". If you need a 24" regularly then 441 is where you want to be.

New vs used? Good saws are not cheap but parts are not either. Skilled repair shop labor is very high and can be difficult to find. Warranty/history(is it stolen?)manuals and the relationship to the selling/servicing dealer are worth more to me than a couple hundred dollar gamble on an unknown quantity.

I run a 25" bar with a skip chain on my MS362 and it is a great combo.

My most used saw is a Husqvarna 365 that I bought off of CL for $100.  We bought a new bar, chain and exhaust gasket for it and it has been doing well for a couple of years now.  It starts quicker and cuts faster than our auto tune saws (1-3 pulls).  Unless you are in a hurry to get rid of your money, you will probably find a better bargain.  The Stihl gas caps and oil caps are deal breakers for me.

I'll just keep looking for a better deal or wait til the right time to buy a new new saw.  I didn't like the caps on my 291 at first, but since I've learned to be a little patient with them and make sure they are on right they are fine.  With my old 025 I put on and take off the caps with the scrench.

I've had zero problems with the Stihl flippy caps so far. I tend to tighten screw caps too much, or go the other way, and try not to tighten them too much, and they dribble. My 2511t is especially good for that. It has a very narrow sweet spot where it's sealed, but still unscrews easily.

Why do you have to wait and "keep looking for a better deal"? The toys listed in your signature such as the 2017 F350 and the Kubota would indicate that you can afford to buy yourself a new chainsaw. "Deals" are great if they come along, but what's the point of denying yourself a new saw for just a couple hundred dollars more than you are willing to pay for a 13 year old used one?

I hear ya.  Yes I can afford to buy a new saw, but I don't need it, so I am looking for a deal.  I also want a new jointer and a bigger shop, but I'm not getting those things either.

Buying used helps me with that sometimes.  I buy new trucks, but I'll buy used tools sometimes and new sometimes.  I can feel better about a want by buying used.  My tractor I bought 2 years ago when it was already 20 years old.

i have had a 361 for almost 15 years ,don't use it every day but it has been a fine saw. I have a tree business so i have from an 880 down to a 193t but my favorite for the job is a 361 or a 362. 500 is too steep i think for a 13 yr old saw.
