Any day spent sawing Walnut is a good day, but I did not saw any "log" that would roll.  ;D

Starting with this butt log.

That was nowhere close to being able to roll.

Shown here with my tailgunner who only a couple of years ago weighed 518 pounds !!!  :o

Which turned out some amazing one live edge 24" X 2ΒΌ" slabs.

Next up was this Halloween Hobgoblin.  :o

Which also turned out some purdy stuff.

The trailer was loaded plus

A whack stickered for the next trip.

I did saw one other log which was not Walnut..

OK, who wants to make the first 'wrong' guess.  ;D

Lynn,

I won't bite on that one without more of the bark showing.

I met my customer again at 7:30 a.m. with threatening rain and 30 or so logs to saw. We started with several medium walnut logs which returned some pretty wood then went back to sawing red spruce which was very challenging. I went through 2 blades yesterday and 6 today.

I sawed hard all day and never even stopped for lunch, water or a cold soda (Where I grew up they were all called Cokes no matter whether they were actually a Coke, Pepsi, RC or Nehi). I had good help, mostly the customer and his dad but my lawyer helped a while too.

We sawed till nearly 6:00 pm finishing with a small cedar the customer had found. When we finished the customer asked me to guess how much lumber we had cut so I gave him a conservative but reasonable guess. He said instead of tallying all this how about I pay you for 20% more than your guesstimate. I was fine with that and we both did well.

This was the final stack. Walnut by the cooler, spruce in front, poplar  and pine in back. This shop foundation is about 4' tall and 20 ' wide and probably 30-36 ft long. Its not perfectly stickered (Not all exactly aligned) but pretty good. At the front are some small green poplars I sawed 2 sides at 6" thick and they put them on top of the 16" square blocks for dunnage.

A different view. It was just before dark and was starting to rain as I loaded up and took these pix.

Not the volume or quality of cedar many of you get to saw but the rain on this fresh cut cedar sure made it pretty. The are 1X7 board and only 6-7 ft long on the big end and taper to 3-4 inches on the little end.

I got home and got everything covered and will unload tomorrow and saw a small poplar order if it ever stops raining. We are scheduled for several days of rain and have have several more jobs in backlog to schedule and do.

I believe that color is actually from an infection or fungus, as it's not what one would naturally think it is based on what is there.  More importantly it's what isn't there.  It's a deja-vu, a gimpse in the corner of your eye, a flash of light, a glancing shadow, one of them, the they.  I have seen it before and it will survive the kiln which is pretty cool.

Southside's response was spot on as to why, and LeeB's was spot on as to what.  Yes, Elm.   :P

This was a sorta burl so there had to be an 'occurance' sometime in the past.  I have also seen that bacterial red in Pine & Oak and it is quite attractive.  When they turned the board over I though....what, Box Elder, but I knew that I was sawing Elm.  Looking at the wood itself, I can easily understand the Pecan or Hickory guesses.

My customer the last 2 days has a blue heeler mix. He was a neat dog and loved to climb on the logs and even the lumber pile which was 4-5 ft tall. When I turned on my electric leaf blower to blow the sawdust off the mill he tried to bite the leaf blower so I cooled his fleas a bit while he snapped at the air and blower tip. My customer says his leaf blower is full of holes where the dog has bitten the snout on it.

our old healer (scout) would bite at the turning lawn mower wheels and just about roll over as we mowed.

Years ago, we had a German Shepard that would bit the front tire of our mini bike.  We would just keep going and roll over him as he let go.  Mom said he was trying to stop us from hurting ourselves.

Had an Old English Bulldog that would attack the vacuum nozzle, might have been brought on by some encouragement on the part of the bachelor vacuum operator. Anyway it made for an interesting response the first time it happened to my my girlfriend turned wife.  :D

You should have seen the time he latched onto a clump of celery she got out of the fridge. No idea why he did it, definitely not something I had ever seen him do, but they were in a tug of war over it with Pudgie winning and me laughing so hard I couldn't intervene. He was actually pulling her across the floor!  :D She still laughs about it.

I unloaded and set up the mill in the pasture and in between rain showers I bucked a 26' poplar into 3-8' logs and cut 2 of them into 4/4 boards for a neighbor who wants to build a 16' long wall with them.

These are the 2 I cut up.

Just over 201 bf. I threw the slabs and edgings on the tractor forks and took them to my big slab pile. I'll probably go through the pile tomorrow and salvage a couple dozen good clear stickers. I should have set them aside as sawing but I was rushed for time and the rain had started back. I'll run up to the customers house 1/4 mile up the road and let him pick what he wants and deliver it on my trailer behind my ATV. I just slid the lumber off on the sawhorses and was easy handing. Of course 8' 4/4 boards is never very much trouble to work with.

WVsawmiller, It seems you saw a lot of poplar. Yellow poplar I presume. That must be a common tree in your area but not so where I am. In all the years I've been sawing I've only sawed lumber from one yellow poplar tree.
To underestimate old men and old machines is the folly of youth. Frank C.

WV Sawmiller

Yes, yellow/tulip poplar is probably almost half of what I saw. It grows fast and commonly in the hollers which are very plentiful in WV. It makes good lumber and the Forestry gurus pointed out at a workshop I did for them a couple years ago that it is similar in strength with pine for framing and such. I have excess poplar I am willing to thin/harvest on my property so, in a case like this, when I am providing the lumber that is most likely what the customer has to choose from. My oaks, cherries, walnut, and hickories are more valuable to me for my wildlife than the value of the lumber I would get. I'll salvage one of them if it dies or blows over but rarely cut a standing green tree except poplar and a stand of Norway Spruce (Overaged Christmas tree farm) off my place.

John and I have had a few sweetgum logs we have been waiting on to spalt. We sawed a short one and it looked good so we proceeded to saw three more 8' logs into 2 3/8" slabs. If they dry relatively flat they will be easy to sell. If they don't, we can burn them.
