Well, I got the bee maple and a yard beech all busted up for firewood and stacked in the woodshed for next year to service the shop. Very close to 1.5 cords in there. I built a fire at 5:00 am this morning in the shop and it's still 80° in there at 2:00 pm, with the windows open.  :uhoh: Not a cold day either, but was 36° this morning outside. 68° in the shop at that time, and windows was open all night. Be interesting to see what happens on a real winter day. It will come soon enough.  :wink_2: It's like summer here right now, 60's, not a cloud in sight and going to remain this way for days.

A few days ago I finished sawing lumber for a while so now into the woods for firewood. While logging in September a large maple fell on another fair sized maple and uprooted it. You can see it in the first two pictures. The wood on top is what is left of the big timber maple. I've been cutting it up and exposing the uprooted tree.

It's not a full load but I was running out of daylight and energy.

As I finished stacking the wood at the barn the sun was just above the horizon and it's light gave the wood a golden color.

For me it's the end of the work day so into the house, feed the wood stoves and relax till supper.

Magic, very true. I like the cutting and splitting better than the stacking, but most of all I like the fire in the woodstove. fire_smiley

I never liked to stack wood so I would load it in the tractor bucket off the splitter and dump it on a concrete pad and old pallets but a few years ago I made a few wood racks out of pallets and used decking and some old lobster trap rope, last year I made a bunch more so now when I split wood instead of stacking it in the tractor bucket and dumping it out I stack it on the pallet/rack and move it with the tractor on rear forks. Each pallet holds about 1/3 of a cord.

SwampDonkey

I usually take a couple days in March or April and stack that whole pile. I only have to wheel it a few feet in a wheel barrel. I do it when there is nothing else to do anyway. Then it's done and over with.

This is the time of the year I normally like to cut firewood. Weather is usually cool and the ground is fairly dry. Guess I'll be holding off awhile this year at least until the doctor says I can take this brace off and my leg is healed. People always ask me (why do you worry about it as it looks like you have plenty ahead). Other than liking good dry wood it's not knowing when something might happen to keep me from being able to cut any, which has happened. I know I'll eventually have to stop burning wood and rely on my furnace and the power company but I'm not looking forward to it. Glad that I already got up on the roof and cleaned the chimney plus put wood on the porch about a month ago.

I've been a very bad boy this year, but don't worry, I will pay for it all winter. I have not been kep9ing up with my wood at all. I used to like to have it all put up by June 1st, but when I started needing another 4 cords for the shop, that dragged on through the summer. I can no longer stack wood all day or split wood all day, I have to break it up and just do a couple of hours at a clip. I also hate stacking and put it off anyway I can. I need to make racks. But no matter hat, 8 cords is a lot of wood and it's daunting.
This summer I spent my time prepping and doing shows and making stuff for re-stocking and new things. Plus time at the mill and family stuff kind of killed my work time for wood. So you guys are making me feel bad, but it's not your fault. I am in deep poop right now, wood wise. My son had his buddy drop me off a cord for the shop last week as a gift. That helps, plus I had put up almost a cord. I am not even thinking about starting the house stove yet and have a bit over a cord for that.
I am trying to be frugal with my shop wood too, but have finishes drying every night so I have to keep it up somewhat. After this next show is prepped I think I will cut back and maybe not heat some days. I could always run down to Bill's and run off a load, but I need the time and there are costs with that.

Trying to get moved to a new location has got me behind as well. I'm doing the same thing as you Hilltop. Straight off the splitter and onto a pallet I can move with the tractor. Organization and mobilization in one step!!
Opportunity is missed by most because it shows up wearing bib overalls and looks like work.

BTW, that's the house wood in that pile. I already had 1-1/2 cord cut and stacked in the shop woodshed already. I have some house wood 2 years old now that I started burning this fall before I get into the 1 year old stuff. 2-1/2 cord of the 2 year old stuff. The 1 year stuff is lots dry and anything inside the buildings is even dryer. Usually around 16% MC outside undercover and around 12% in heated buildings. I actually prefer it outside undercover because it doesn't mould on the end of the sticks. Probably better air flow because of the wind. Inside is dead non turbulent air which doesn't get exchanged much in the basement. The air exchange is in the living quarters.

Remember this picture from my last picture post?

This is what it looks like now.

Just a couple of brush piles that the little woods creatures will like.

Now, do you remember the uprooted tree in my last post?

When I cut the tree off the stump the root ball went back down.

Well, the real reason I went up into the woods was not to take those pictures but to cut wood. I worked on cutting up the last of the maple tops.

It is raining lightly right now but is not supposed to last so I'll wait a while before going back up into the woods.

I've got a mess that I want to clean up. An ewp got struck by lighting. I have cleaned up most of the limbs and big wood. Now to get the tops. Then an red oak broke off and I still have some of the limbs from that to clean up. I have 6 chockers and one hook and they will be all full and the loader will have a bunch of wood in it too.

I sawed up 3 ewp tops and I headed for the woods to twitch out more.
I filled up the chockers and cut some fir and more ewp limbs to put in the loader and on the arms too. Came in a little before 9 tonight
Just another night in the woods after work.
I have a couple big stubs that need to hauled out too. These must be at least 20 feet long. They broke off in a windstorm.

You did all that in the dark? What kind of lights do you have?
To underestimate old men and old machines is the folly of youth. Frank C.

thecfarm

Just a head lamp.
It's a nebo.
Really lights up in front and on the sides.
I had one nebo that just lite up right in front of me.
Did not like that one.
I don't cut trees down when it's dark.
The above are all blown downs.
But i have cut trees in daylight and then limb and haul them out when it's dark

Never thought of using headlamp. Just head lights at nite. Head lamp too would be better. I'm going to try it next time I have to cut at nite. Usually a tree on the road. I hardly ever plan to work at nite any more.

gg

thecfarm

I like a head lamp because the light is where I am.
I use to work by tractor lights but had shadows.
I can look at the side of the tractor when I am driving.

Just like the other night.
I had a bucket full of wood and wood was on the arms too.
The tractor lights would have been useless. They would have been shining onto the wood.  :wacky:
I work until 5 each night. Maybe when I am not working anymore, I won't have to work when it is dark.
I mentioned that light that just lite in front of me. I have a 500 foot driveway and with recharged batteries I could see the light poles on the road. But when cutting wood I don't care about seeing 500 feet away.
The one I use now works real good.

If you attach the light to your helmet how do you do that ? I am thinking of making a bracket for my welding helmet but maybe there is a better way ??

We use a headlamp in SAR and it goes on your helmet.  some helmets have fasteners or an integrated light.  It has a batt. pack on the back with an amber light so folks can see it when behind you.  wide or focused beam or both.  about 60 bucks.  look at SAR or caving stuff.
