Hello everyone, I'm looking for some feedback here.

I have developed a chainsaw drill start system that I started as a fun project to see if I could make one for my Stihl MS660. Basically, it's a direct flywheel cover replacement (made from another flywheel cover for my MS660) that houses the one way clutch with a hex shaft sticking out of the cover less than 1" that can be turned with any 18-20v battery drill. I have a working prototype that makes starting my saw very easy and I have applied my design to the MS440, MS880 and 090 models but haven't made them yet.

Cold starting procedure is as follows:

1. Place saw on stable surface and apply chain break.
2. Place right hand on throttle and hold wide open (no choke or decompression used)
3. Use left hand to hold drill and engage hex shaft with socket and hold firmly.
4. Run drill full blast until saw starts.
5. Work throttle until RPM stabilizes.
6. Get 'er done!!!

Hot starting procedure:

1. Place saw on stable surface and apply chain break.
2. Place right hand on throttle handle and just hold saw steady.
3. Use left hand to hold drill and engage hex shaft with socket and hold firmly.
4. One quick full blast turn of the drill and fires back up.
5. Get back to it!!!

Everyone that I have shown this to says they want one.

What are all of your thoughts about such a device?

Ditto. I'm fine with a rope, but age might change my mind. One thing that would be interesting, is using it for a dedicated milling saw. It's a bit of a hassle pulling it over in the cut while clamped in the mill. Carrying a drill as extra gear is a negligible addition to the other stuff you need to carry for milling.

Real1shepherd

Good point....I can see this as an asset in milling with the saw locked into place.

Quad, might want to go see an patent attorney asap!  First, I would check with the u s. patent office and see if there is already a patent issued for something like this.  I invented, or so I thought, a great thing, until I checked online with the patent office.  I was about 6 months too late!!  lol

I tried that on a 95 cc old Sears gear drive chainsaw that came over on the Mayflower .Spun the nut off ,the flywheel orbited my garage twice .I hit the deck in fear for my life .The flywheel just barely missed my wife's Cadillac .Sounded like good plan but wasn't .I never did find the nut .

I've done some searching on the U.S. Patent Office website and found nothing. I'm trying to see how much interest there is for such a device otherwise it's a moot point. Thanks.

That was a close call there. My design does not have this problem.

Whose paying for the market research here? This is advertising. Okay, beat me up chainsaw boys. Everything should be free I know, but they charge me for gas everytime I fill up so just saying. I see the original poster signed up now for the forum just for this reason, to advertise to you on me.

I have three things I invented. I've been told it will cost thousands to search and apply for patents. That's put me off all these yrs. One is really tricky and aimed @kids and the other two are tool inventions.

As far as electric starters ,that's already been done but they never went over that well .On other applications for example racing go karts the comp was nearly diesel compression .They used long shafted Ford starters with a vee belt pulley on it plus on the engine to roll them over .I used the same set up to start the pony engine on a D4 Caterpillar .

I'd be more interested in a capacitor driven starter similar to the "shot start" like on the Skidoo snowmobiles that you can either pre-charge or only have to pull start at the start of the day rather than carry a drill to start the saw.

There's nothing for sale. Right now there is only one of these and it's not for sale. I'm just seeing how much interest (if any) there is for such a thing within the chainsaw community.

Google market research then cost of market research.  You are not playing within our rules.

If I may....
Jeff's point is probably based on the fact that your participation on this forum has revolved only around what you want. You have 2 threads based on the same subject and 10 posts, only on those two threads. There is no indication of you offering up your personal knowledge or opinions on any other thread. Therefore he probably deduces, as I have, that you are here simply to support your product and your research to get that product to market.

That's not what this forum is about. There are costs to maintain it which Jeff pays through support from sponsors and some supporting members that see the value here. So he is paying for your market research. I bet that wouldn't be a problem for him if your were a normal participating member who contributes something of value to others in the membership by way of thoughtful input. Right now, it's looking like a one way street.
