I had 2 cedar logs in the range of 14" diameter today that were flawless.  That made me happy after the bigger one yesterday was junk.

The job that I have not been looking forward to was worth not looking forward to.  :-X  I got a cut list for framing lumber and I will saw framing lumber but guess what was first??

Some of the logs, mostly SYP but something else is hiding.  ::)

Yup Oak logs.  One smallish but the rest were..... :o

Does this butt make my sawmill look little.  No pictures of it/them on the sawmill and I forgot to take a picture of the 2" X full width slabs.  We sawed 40 of them today and tomorrow will be another day.

I will stand by my Reply #468 above.  You are looking at the one board that has a thin end, but are you looking at the other boards that have thicker ends?  They are "stealing" thickness from the thin board (usually the bottom board) as stress is causing your cant to rise.

When this happens will you notice a gap between the cant and the bunk?

Magicman

Absolutely, maybe not much but it is there.

As trapper mentioned above, if the cant is beyond the bed rail you won't see it but the end is raising up.

I will triple agree with the description MM has given.  It's common with SYP - especially with plantation grown logs, and gets worse with logs that overhang the bunks.

Couldn't you just warn your client ahead of time of the risks. You can only do the best you can with the logs your supplied.

Yes I could/would but it seldom comes up.  You only have to put one on the sawmill and let them watch what happens.  :o

Actually probably most of my sawing is old growth Shortleaf Pine.

More too big logs today as seen beside my 6' tailgunner.  This one was 36" top end and Bibbyed on the butt.

These 40 full 2" slabs were from yesterday and we sawed an additional 40 today.  They range from 12" to 26" wide.  Tomorrow will be more of the same.

I had a minor distraction this morning that is seen in the "Dumb" topic.  :-X

Edit:  My customer just sent me a message and we will finally be sawing the framing lumber cut list tomorrow and next week.  Wheeeew !!!  smiley_thumbsup

I pointed it out to him when he picked the stacks up yesterday.  He said he noticed a random board as well.  We will be flippin' cants when we cut the 16 foot floor joists.  Right now it is all truss members, so most ends will get cut off.

Lynn,
What is so bad about them to negate sawing them?

Fast grown plantation pine will usually contain a much higher percentage of juvenile wood, which doesn't have the wood fiber necessary to provide the structural strength and stability compared to slower growing, thicker cell walled mature wood.

I would compare it with an undisciplined teenager because it got big before it got old.  The boards peel off like a banana so the customer gets very little usable lumber and what do you get for the sawing.  :-X

My answer is no.

I needed a bunch of 3/4×12×8's so I cut a big 16' log in half last night and got them both done. This was the smaller half. Gotta edge and sticker this morning.

42  full 2" X up to 26" X 12' mostly live edge Red Oak that I sawed Thursday & Friday.  He has about 10-12 more Oak logs that will wait until we finish the framing lumber.

I was happy this morning to even saw junker SYP logs.  Some very good and some not so much.

The customer's wife brought lunch.  Enchiladas and Jambalaya, so I brought my sammich back home.

We will be back to sawing framing lumber Monday.

I sawed 82 ten and twelve foot full 2" X up to 26" Thursday & Friday.  My customer has them advertised @ $350 each or two for $500.  Here are the first two leaving today.

We sawed framing lumber Saturday and today which is being stickered.  The 2X8 and 2X12 cut list is complete and I am now sawing 2X4's & 2X6's.  If I don't complete this job this week, it will be waiting on me when we get back from the Project.  No sawing tomorrow nor next week.

Lynn,

What kind of wood are those 2"X 26" LE boards? They look to be about 12' long in the picture.
