I've never seen ambrosia beetles get after wood so aggressively.

That is amazing.  The ambrosia beetle holes only appear to be in the heartwood?

I chainsawed out 1/4 of that big cherry log and took it to the mill.  It's pretty disappointing due to the ring shake that goes all the way around the log.  I'm quartersawing it, but not getting any wide boards because most boards have a crack and I have to resaw it into 1x4.  It's pretty wood though.

FFOTS,
Are you ¼sawing because of the ring shake to maximize the number of usable boards or is there something about ¼sawn cherry that is special?  Don't have any cherry out here that I'm aware of.

FFOTS can you take off the other 1/4 to leave a half, then flat saw through that and get some quarter sawn in the mid half of that as you saw?  at least it is obvious so you did not make a project and have it appear later. you win some and loose some.  It is somewhere in the middle.  not a complete loss you can always joint and glue up for smaller projects.  great big logs get your hopes up and often have age/size related issues

Cherry has very fine medullary rays.  When quarter sawn, the wood has kind of a sparkling look as opposed to something like oak that has big rays.  Since I was having to quarter this log just to be able to mill it, quarter sawing just seemed to make the most sense.

@doc henderson I could possible do that.  I'm not sure I would be able to stand it up like that and even half of the log is still right at the limit of my loader to lift.

you know your equipment best.  you could also trim the two outer edges of the final half if that makes sense (at the intersection of the shake ring).  you only gain nice sawn wood in the center.  if you chainsaw it in half (into quarters) then there will be some waste at the widest boards in the middle.  prob. not that much to gain and better to not push beyond the limits of your stuff.  I do not want to be the reason you have to fix your cylinders... again!   :o :)
you can test picking up the half and if close trimming the shake off the two ends of the half, might be enough.

Those are good thoughts, Doc.  I also considered splitting whats left in half and then put that on the mill and get some wider flat sawn boards.  I should be able to lift those pieces.

Hank and I sawed cedar today, but by early afternoon we got frustrated because our pile wasn't growing very fast.  We quit and went hiking.

The daffodil's have been blooming for a couple of weeks now but this is the first crocus we have spotted this year.

The spring peepers are in full chorus and sound was almost deafening.

Came in from our hike and see the weatherman is forecasting a full blown ice storm for Wednesday! :o >:( :o ::) ??? :-[ :-[ :-[
