Shame on me...I turned on my kiln today for the first time in about 8 months.  Kind of hard to make money selling kiln dried hardwoods when you never dry any.  I put some elm, some red oak and walnut in there.  Some short walnut slabs with crotch figure are gonna be really neat.  Perhaps I can sell them at a premium or I will make a coffee table and see if it sells.

Actually future sawing. My wife got a call yesterday from the old school secretary from her teaching days. The lady is now a widow living alone and said this walnut tree had fallen against her house and wondered if I wanted it. We went over and while they visited I cut the tree into firewood, stacked the bigger limbs and cut about 20' of the butt into small logs I will go back and get later.

A brushpile near my truck

A stack of firewood scattered across her yard for her gardener to stack along with a bunch of small limbs and leaves and green walnuts from the tree. Once I got the top moved I could see damages included gutter issues and two metal handrails and the brickwork where the handrails were mounted into the brick steps. Fortunately no apparent structural damage or even any broken windows.

Nothing huge but I'll get a few boards, 8/4 LE slabs and maybe some 9/4 square stock for bench legs. I'll return with my 5X8 trailer, a cant hook and maybe a couple of small poles to parbuckle these onto my trailer while my wife visits some more. The wood is not worth the trip and the effort but helping a friend is.
You are a good man.

I had to have a front flat repaired a week ago on similar sized Kabota.  It already had a tube in it so it was replaced.  The guy said next time tires will probably need to be replaced because of dry rot.  :(  I don't look forward to 2 new fronts.   Rears are same age.  :o

I also like having a front-end loader to avoid the use of a jack!
my fronts are dry cracked and I put green slime in a few years ago so far so good.

Doc Hagley came over.  we had picked up a locust (honey) and a maple (soft).  big ugly trunk but as usual it turned out to heave some great figure.  still have one too big for the mill and will have to bibby it down.

then Roger (ED pharmacist) came over.  he had a few oak logs from a railway right of way on his Dad's property out in Hays, KS.  (Fort Hays State University)  He has a couple old trucks.  He brought his wife Roxie's truck.  a 70s ford, owned by her grandpa and passed down.  it has a dump bed, and it needs a new bed floor.  you guessed it, oak boards.  Roger has a newer on also and it need the same treatment.  nice it came from his childhood farm.

Jimmy @Jim Thomas can hear the sound of engines from a block away, so he came over to see what we were up to.
wood for two floors and some live edge shelves from the off cut.

I spent a bit over $400 with mounting for the 2 tires.
OUCH!  Pay to play.

I had assumed slime would not help with a tube in the dry rotten tire.

I have traveled through Hays, KS many times so I suppose that both of the trees in Hays were felled.  :D

he said they had flooding by the rail right of way, and the trees died.  there are quite a few, but only 15 to 24 inches in diameter large end.  we had trouble getting a 10 inch cant our of these as they had a slight curve as well.

This was the second log from the big Ponderosa pine.  39" x 35'.

Took a small slice off the top to reveal a 17"-~25" opening face.  Took a 8" slice off from there:

Then another 12" (actually closer to 13" for trim up later) that was 38" wide.  At the limit for my mill as there was a ¼" or so of wave.

Then the final bit I could flip and take another 8" cant.

The result:

Shown here were five 8x12 and one 8x15 but also produced an 8x8 and a 2x8 - all 35' long for a total of 1,984 bdft!

And a bit of firewood (one of 3 loads):

Really cool! How long did it take to to saw it up?
Change is hard....
Especially when a jar full of it falls off the top shelf and hits your head!

Local wind direction is determined by how I park my mill.

One day to break it down into the big cants, one day to make the beams and then put them back on the mill to true up the wavy edges (top and bottom) and cleaning up around the mill.  Got real good at slinging and half rolling without crashing them on the mill.  That's where some help would have really come in handy.  Lots of climbing on and off the SkyTrak.  Did something stupid on the last cant and I knew better.  I backed up the blade to fix a perceived rise in the cut only to pop the blade off the wheels.  That took a good 45 minutes to correct ::)

Oh, yeah.  Did I forget to say I love my new tractor?  Much better than a wheelbarrow!

Quebec, do you have a process to dry cookies without them splitting.
John, I keep wedges at the mill to widen the kerf in case I have to back out a blade. or if one breaks in the cut.  If they are in the shop, I would be tempted to just back up slow.  I have gotten away with it, and have also ruined a blade or two, as they came off and got mangled up.  that is some impressive sawing and big sticks.

I was just tired and hot after a 10 hour day and being extra stupid.  There wasn't even a rise in the blade - it was a change in grain direction that made the blade look as if it took a rise.  I used a Magic kerf cleaning tool (section of blade with duct tape handle) to clean out the wet sawdust after I removed most of the cut off edging.  It's just that that (Tom) edging was an 8x8 piece.  Looked like a quartered 16" diameter log!

i did the same thing day before yesterday and got away with it.  Just enough to make us think it will save time to just back up slow.  i usually keep the blade running when i do, and it makes a mess when it does not work.  1 hour in this weather can cloud our judgement.   :D

Like that log raft pic, makes me think of history photos and how many entire forests were floated down stream to the mill. smiley_thumbsup

That Ford pickup Doc's customer has would have to be an early 70's if it's a 70's. They used that same body style from 1967 to 1972, would have to see the grill to know for sure.

It is a 1972  3/4 ton F250 2wd.  300ci in-line 6 with a 4 speed transmission.  tilt bed.  Rodger said to fill it with more grain, they had home made bed extenders that his "old man" referred to as Tip Tops.  they went on all 4 sides.  they would leave the seed wheat in it in the shed for the next planting.  They actually live outside of Natoma, Ks.  the trees came off of paradise creak that runs through the property into the Saline river, and ultimately Wilson lake.

No special way to keep them from splitting . Some do and some don't .

Work with or around the cracks is my way .

I sawed a quickie 1195 bf job this morning.  I spent 3 hours sawing twelve 10"X10"X10' Cypress timbers with side lumber.  Back home for lunch.

I know that species, thickness relative to diameter, and drying conditions make a difference.  maybe I should start a thread.  i have had the best luck in my drying container (approx. AC space) and stacked with stickers.  also after soaking in denatured alcohol, and drying in a box to slow things down.

My son cut some rough looking Red Oak logs and I went up to his place 10 miles up the road this morning to cut them for him. Mostly deer blind material but a few boards for future flooring. For sheeting on the deer blinds he had me cut them 1/2" thick. You know you can cut a lot of coverage out of a small log cutting it that thin.

One before and no after pictures. This was the only 12' log in the bunch and it made 15 - 2X4s. We were too rushed for him to get cleaned up and off to work. Lots of black ants, sawed the tail off one salamander and found a pretty good nest cavity in one log. All total about 1004 bf/sf in about 8 logs. It was hard work but always good to spend time with my son.

We got soaked in a quick thunderstorm on the next to last log. It passed over and we finished before he had to go to work on the swing shift. I packed up and came on home and put everything away.

I smelled some burning belt and see pieces missing from my drive belt so that is the next project to replace it.
